New Music Releases Thread

Great lineup for that, raconteurs, interpol, courtney barnett, anna calvi too.

Think I'd scoped out a running order of something like Pregoblin, Our Girl, Fat White Family, Parquet Courts, Interpol then The Strokes. Not a bad day out. Just need to moderate the drinking to avoid ruining the Sunday. :-)

Me and the missus are currently working on an album, should be out August...nothing clever, just pretty songs. We would have done it years ago but I had to drag my low Baritone drone up to tenor which is a 10 semitone hike, and that has been a right royal struggle...watch this space :D

Available on bandcamp soon Prana Crafter is due to release both vinyl and cd versions of an album he put out a year or two ago on cassette, Bodhi Cheetah’s Choice. Cosmic, lo-fi psychedelia at its best.

Quite enjoyed Sebadoh and Honeyblood - no big surprises. I fancy Sebadoh to grow on me. Honeyblood, I miss the sound of the first album as they get much more polished and produced, but I'm noticing that's me as it seems to happen with most artists I listen to.

Waterboys, I'm not 100% sure but I think it might be a bit bizarre and absolutely f***ing terrible. It opened with a decent-ish bombastic Scott number (even if he was putting a bit too much organ about, matron), but then there was a random tribute about Mick Jones and hanging out with him in London (how they went to watch Spinal Tap together ), a couple of awful nondescript ones, something that sounded like a cut-price Sugar Ray 25 years late with him kind of rapping and then an actual rapper, something that sounded vaguely linked to the Mick Jones song (about hanging in Ladbrooke Grove again and dancing to the reggae sound systems on the street corners - nothing says classic Waterboys more than that image), and finally a spoken word Piper at the Gates of Dawn, but seemingly not a cover of Van Morrison or a tribute to Floyd - can only assume it was an actual tribute to Wind in the Willows...all left me rather non-plussed

Great description of the current state of the Waterboys. I loved their early stuff seen them about half a dozen times, but their output from the last 10 years or so does nowt for me, a shadow of the band they used to be.

Had about 3 listens to the National album it’s getting better each time, whether it reaches the heights of their other albums I’m not sure yet. I’d say it was their least accessible album. Patience required!...
Had the new Cate le Bon album on earlier, very nice.

The quality beyondbeyondisbeyond label which holds the aforementioned Prana Crafter album currently has a 20% discount on their bandcamp site on everything with the code: jamorial

The Rose City Band’s self titled debut album is absolutely stunning. It’s produced by the Wooden Shjips/Moon Duo main man Ripley Johnson which helps to give you a starter for their sound.

RIght, I've had a bumper weekend listening to new music, both at home and on public transport to and from Wembley then at work today. My feelings on things:

Rose City Band - as @oldmanofthemountain of the mountain has said, this really is very good indeed! As has been mentioned, Wooden Shjips and Moon Duo are a good starting reference, for obvious reasons, but, for me, there's more of a country rock vibe to some degree.
Frankie Lee - his second album. Essentially, more of the same well written big sounding Americana of his debut but probably with a slightly bigger budget.
Boogarins - Brazilian tropicalia/psych rock. Slightly low key but enjoyable. All in Portuguese (as you'd maybe expect).
Mavis Staples - produced by Ben Harper on this occasion, after previous albums produced by Ry Cooder, M Ward and (three times) by Jeff Tweedy. This gives her songs a slightly more muscular bluesy feel. Very good, although I prefer the Tweedy albums.
Amyl and the Sniffers - Aussie punk types, with some glam rock overtones. Short, sharp, loud, fun!
Black Mountain - more high quality spaced out psych rock from Stephen McBean and one of his gangs. They should be a lot more well known than they are!
Cate Le Bon - I initially listened to this on the way home on Sunday and it kept me entertained. It's pretty lovely really. She's becoming one of those artists you can trust to be good (aside from that last Drinks album).
BCUC - more joyously weird brilliant Afropsychedelia (their term) from the band whose full name is quite long (Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness). Three tracks, as with their last album, two long and kind of sounding like several songs rolled together and one shorter and more focused. Femi Kuti and Saul Williams both guest. Think they're playing some festivals in the summer.
Guards - pretty decent but by no means outstanding. Got a bit of an Arcade Fire vibe to them at times. Probably the album listed that will appeal most to your more mainstream indie band chums.
Flying Lotus - bit of a disappointment for me. 27 tracks (a lot fairly short). Could easily have been a much better, more focused album.
Sebadoh - it's a Sebadoh album, probably their best in 20odd years. You basically get a history of low-fi (ish) indie rock from the 80s through to today (ish).
Hayden Thorpe - polished and mature. Good songs, good album. Sounds, as expected like Wild Beasts if all the songs had been sung by Hayden Thorpe.
Madonnatron - a big step up on their indie girl debut. This is a really, really good album of irreverent pop songs. The charts await (in an alternate universe).
Faye Webster - she started out as a fairly straight folk singer but has gradually taken in hiphop, soul and R'n'B influences. A good album for summer!
Nots - Three piece female indie-punk band from Memphis. Quite enjoyable but doesn't strike me as the best thing released this week. May be a grower?
Tyler Ramsey - former Band of Horses guitarist. This is his fourth solo album but first since leaving them. I tihnk this has been out for a while. It's really good. Reminds me of earlyish My Morning Jacket and, unsurprisingly Band of Horses.

All in all, FlyLo aside, a pretty good week for new (to me) music!

We don’t often disagree, but I enjoyed Guards the most out of those!

Amyl and Sniffers is fun, bit bogan mind
Mavis Staples is very good
Madonnatron disappointed
Sebadoh really disappointing
Cate le Bon really poor by her standards

APE was annoying, the sound was crap. @MackneyHackem and @James worth emailing them a complaint as could be getting something back (maybe not)

I didn’t think the sound was that bad. Saw @James (I think?) nashing off from Interpol mind and everyone who was there said the sound was gash for Interpol, which it was.

You're right about the boganity of Amyl & the Sniffers.

Was absolutely dreadful in most places. I was utterly twatted as well

I sacked Interpol off like I thought they were shite, sound was poor from where I was. I must have got lucky for The Strokes as the sound was okay for me, I was also massively pissed at this point despite promising mesel that I'd slow down as the evening went on to avoid a play off final hangover. Seems like it was for the best in the end.

Enjoyed last year more, but can't complain as I was there on a freebie!

I didn't care for the Madonnatron, actually. I guess I prefer the Indie sound

Will have to check out Guards... never heard of them before, but will give them a listen

I also listened to a band called ALASKALASKA (or something like that) over the weekend, the album they just released this year and I liked it. Reminds me of the old Romeo Void but probably only because they use a saxophone. Songs Moon, Monster, and Meateater are very good.
