New Music Releases Thread

I see Cabbage are splitting up. I thought they were going to be a big Fall type alternative act at one point. I guess it wasn't to be...

Never really recovered from the whole did he / didn’t he put his hands down his kegs and wipe his fingers on a young girl scenario…

I was actually at that gig. Supporting Kasabian at The Forum.

There’s better Fall-ish alternative bands knocking about since Cabbage first emerged anyway, in my humble opinion.

I always thought they'd have made more of a go of it if Joe (the MLF) had been the main front man anyway.

Found out this morning that Anders Parker released a new album 6 weeks ago. His 2017 release was very good so looking forward to giving this a spin later.

A lot to get through this week (and a few pushed to later weeks), hence it's taken me a while to post. My summary of the new and "new" this week:

Dylan Leblanc: a covers EP from the summer that I've just caught up with. Pretty decent but not essential.
Lucid Express: Young Hong Kong based shoegazers. This is good actually. File under promising.
Lee Ranaldo: an EP/mini-album of guitar pieces inspired by Covid-19. Fairly engaging.
Yasmin Williams: I missed this totally when it came out in January but a track on Uncut's best of the year CD alerted me to her. Acoustic guitar instrumental pieces which are always interesting and intriguing. Very good!
Anna Leone: she's a Swedish folkie/hippy tpye. This is an excellent album of loveliness.
Malcolm Jiyane Tree-O: South African jazz. Good but not outstandingly good.
Courtney Barnett: I think this is her best/most consistent album thus far. The usual slacker indie stuff done really well.
Damon Albarn: a cause of much controversy on this board seemingly. I like it anyway. He's always inventive and engaging.
Devin Hoff: the songs of Anne Briggs given a modern treatment whilst still retaining their folk past. He's a bassist (and composer/arranger) and gets a lot of mates in on vocals - Sharon van Etten, Shannon Lay etc. Tastefully done.
Henry Parker: a metalhead turned folkie from somewhere rural near Leeds. This reminds me a lot of Ryley Walker. It's also very impressive! A name to follow.
Kiran Leonard * 2: Mr Obtuse has made two, I guess, companion albums. One consists of longer instrumental tracks and the other, shorter snappier maybe more easy to listen to tracks. Both pretty good.
Pip Blom: indiepop from the Netherlands. Nicely done but they tend to be badly trousered in band photos.
Yova: a core due of a Macedonian singer with a London based multi-instrumentalist. This starts out quite nice in a poppyish wash but the lat three tracks suddenly mutate to something terrific.
Endless Boogie: long tracks with riffs aplenty, obscure story based songs and Beefheartian vocals. It's probably a good intro point to Endless Boogie although this no Might Fine Pie or Back In 74 here.
Idles: a return to form after the disappointing Ultra Mono. This combines their usual anger with some of the hooks that were lacking on the previous album. Very good!
Jon Hopkins: probably ambient like being bathed in unicorn bubble bath whilst getting a head massage from faeries. Quite enjoyable!
Fortitude Valley: north east band alert! There's at least one member of Martha here. It's a pretty solid female fronted indie-pop/punk album.
Efterklang: the Danish indie arthouse types are back (well, they were about two months ago, seemingly). It's a good album which gets better as it reaches its ending.
The Electric Eye: Norwegian psych rockers. This is their fifth album apparently but first I've listened to. It's good so I may need to go back catalogue digging a bit.
Richard Fearless: more ambience but a bit more droney and jagged than the Jon Hopkins album. It's good for walking about town to and a bit akin to being bathed in rhino bubble bath whilst getting a head massage from viking warriors.
Dave Gahan & Soulsavers: a covers album. I preferred it when Mark Lanegan was Soulsavers preferred vocalist. This is prefectly fine but not essential by any means.
Heartless Bastards: their first album in six years and, I think, a new line up bar Erika Wennerstrom. Not totoally new but largely excellent. Has its heart in indie rock but reaches out elsewhere.
The Oscillation: London based psych rockers. This is very good. They've been around for a while and their name makes them sound like the villains in a Dr Who Christmas special.
Slothrust: a tricky one. Is the name "Sloth Rust" or is it "Slo Thrust"? Anyway, alt rockers from Boston who are centred around Leah Wellbaum's vocals and guitar. Worth a listen.
Strawberry Guy: hippyish indie whimsy from Merseyside. He's really rather good.
The The: it's taken me a couple of weeks to get round to this. Their live comeback at the RHA in 2018, which has been released in many forms. Musically, it's great but Matt Johnson's between songs banter is pretty poor.

Album of the Week: partly because the Yasmin Williams album came out in January, I'm going to say Henry Parker, although Anna Leone runs him close. The big names (Courtney, Damon, Idles, Jon Hopkins and his unicorn bubble bath) are all very good also.

It's Sloth Rust - they are great, esp live, but this is the most disappointing so far for me. Maybe it'll grow. I'd try the last couple first.

I'll need to listen to the earlier stuff.

The UK version:

I think the two lists differ a little.

Think I recall posting some videos on here a couple of years ago, if you can be arsed to dig back - couple of singles from Everyone Else. Of Course You Do, Everyone Else, and The Pact are more my wheelhouse, some crackers on those - the new one didn't grab me on first listen, musically or design/packaging, but I should give it more of a listen.

Another relatively busy week for new releases as we get toward the slow down period. There are albums from Adele, Body/Dilloway/Head (one of Kim Gordon's projects), Clams Casino, Converge, Deap Vally, Elbow, Holy Other, Jessica Moss, Jessy Lanza, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Simon And The Island, Smile, Sting, The Darkness, Alan Tyler,Sissi Rada, OSS, Hoo, Modern Nature and Ladyhawke.

Stealing Sheep & The Radiophonic Workshop are releasing their album on Tuesday, seemingly.

Relatively busy but not particularly exciting. Definitely Ladyhawke for me, maybe Plant/Krauss, Converge and Body/Dilloway/Head.

Is that Smile as in Thom Yorke?
