New Music Releases Thread

Part 2 of what may be a three or four part week:

Pet Shimmers - more of the same from them really. Slackerish indie with electronic undertones. Decent!
Elvis Perkins - sort of folkish soft rock. Nice enough but he's not really hit the heights of his first two albums, Ash Wednesday and In Dearland since.
Pacific Range - very Laurel Canyon sounding 70s ish Americana. Reminds me of Jonathan Wilson or The Chris Robinson Brotherhood.
Joachim Cooder - this is terrific from Ry's son! It's cover of songs by an old time American folkie, Uncle Dave Macon, played in part on instuments from the middle east and Africa (Turkish lute, African thumb piano etc.). He's got a really warm voice. Reminds me a little of Paul Simon.
Dawes - it's perfectly nice, pleasant songs, good musicianship, singer's got a good voice, just seems to be the same album they usually make.
Death Valley Girls - I like this a lot. Part 60s girl group, part early 80s post punk/goth cross. Interesting right through.
Jonsi - I guess this is fine in the absence of anything new from Sigur Ros. A mix of slower more ambient songs and some stuff aimed for the dancefloor.
Roisin Murphy - very good. Dancefloor oriented sophisto-pop basically. Is that a genre? Quality songs essentially.
Hello Forever - 60s pop harmonies, slightly psychedelic. Not sure it'd make my end of year top X list but it's an enjoyable piece of whimsy on a dull day.

Part 3:

Frankie & the Witch Fingers - garage psych-rock. They come on like a cross between Oh Sees and King Gizzard but not as good as either.
William Shatner - Shatner sings the blues. It's fun, that's about it.
Drive By Truckers - initally, I'm underwhelmed. Seems like Truckers by numbers closed by a fairly pointless cover of "The KKK Took My Baby Away".
Fruit Bats - pretty good, very low key and fragile.
Kurt Vile - lovely stuff. John Prine covers done KV style.
Hot Chip's Late Night Tales - a comp with three or four of their own tracks. Tastefully, chilled out stuff, as the Late Night Tales albums usually are.

Album of the Week: a tie between Working Men's Club and Joachim Cooder.

Loving this new debut single from Late Night Final. It’s a side project from the main bloke from Public Service Broadcasting and it’s a 10 minute Slow burner into big crescendo type of tune.

There are albums this week from Bahamas, Brothers Osborne, Dizzee Rascal, Future Islands, Global Charming, Jeen, Laraaji, Machinedrum, Mary Lattimore, Metz, Mina Tindle, Touche Amore, Travis, Loudon Wainwright III, Emmy the Great, Josephine Davies, Andy Bell (of Ride), Steve Arrington and Garcia Peoples.

I’ll try that on the basis that PSB are canny and Late Night Final is my favourite Richard Hawley album, maybe.

I missed new album releases by Crippled Black Phoenix and North Americans in my new releases for today. Also, an EP by yo la Tengo (mostly covers but one new song of theirs).

Is North Americans different to the Mary Lattimore in your list?

Ignore me - I just saw it is - Silver Ladders. As you were

Some stuff I've been catching up on:

Out Today

Drew Citron - former member of Beverley and Frankie Rose. Reminded me of an American version of Katie Malco (one of my faves of the year so far). Guitar indie with a couple of flecks of Americana here and there. Really liked it.
Slow Pup - indie rock, laid-back and catchy in equal doses with a guitary squall here and there. First pass and a half, very good - liked it a lot. Will revisit.
Supercrush - 3-minute indie sunny harmony belters from Seattle. Without a doubt in my top 5 early Teenage Fanclub albums.
Vis Invis Electrique - instrumental noise rock electronica from Brooklyn. Started with great promise but went a bit meh monotonous for me.

Other stuff from today that I gave a listen to with varying levels of interest were albums by Lupin (singer of another band that escapes me), Lewis Del Mar, and Two Feet

Stuff I caught up on and liked, from the past couple of weeks, that I don't think were listed on here (although "Search" has let me down before)

Death Bells - post-punk but of the mainstream variety - think Editors / White Lies
Wax Chattels - post-punk of the noisy, angular, abrasive. More like the recent Irish stuff or Savages, depending if it was the bloke or lass singing
Shutups - a solid noisey indie guitar EP
Seth Bogart - don't really recall what this was like, but I wrote it down so must have been ok in my mind
Sad13 - I know this was in one of weekly lists but finally got around to it. Not as good as Sadie D's Speedy Ortiz stuff, and thought they were better live, too. Solid enough indie fare. I'll listen again but nothing groundbreaking on first listen
Vistas - Scottish mainstream guitar pop. I like them (posted about them once on this thread a couple of years back). Somehow I missed this release from back in May - It'll be too polished and upbeat for many but they get a smile from me. Preferred their singles though
