Notice that lass in the original post said the SoL used to also be served by the yellow line till 2005 so you could get a Metro direct from St James via the coast.

The shields line used to run to the airport originally, then they swapped it for Sunderland. I guess it was thought more traffic went there than from shields?
 
Good little summary from the metro pub crawler. I know it's not the point of the exercise but I couldn't dive off at Gateshead and not get amongst those that are open in the Railway Qtr.
