Back up with the view being to eventually compete for the number 1 jersey. If he were at the tail end of his career I would say back up only.

When Patterson was the same age as Ellborg, he'd just had a loan finished in the conference and came back to Sunderland. If the club didn’t think Patto would make it I can’t see how they think this kid will
Patto isn’t brilliant but he’s a better shot stopper than Mellborg

Aye but thats a completely different question to asking if a 22 year old keeper is 'perennial backup'.Fair enough but if we’re talking about next season and playing regular Patto would give me more confidence than Ellborg does right now

Why can't people just give young players time? He won't have been bought to start even next season.
Even Pickford was 22/23 ish before becoming our number 1.Comparing any young keeper to Pickford is a tough one man. He's been Englands number 1 for 10 yrs and isn't he one of England's highest ever appearance holders? The hero of multiple tournaments
He was unbelievable at a young age but it's possible to be a very solid Premier League goalkeeper without being compared to JP.
It's too early to say, clearly. Let's give the lad a chance. I suspect he'll end up understudy to Young when we inevitably sell Roefs.
Its just mental to write players off so easily.I get he’s been put in well before we expected him to be and he’s got plenty of time to develop, he may well make it but…
His handling is poor
Distribution is hit and miss
Can’t get through bodies to claim or punch a ball
I just think there’s too much wrong for him to be a premier league goal keeper

Emi Martinez at villa was playing at Sheffield Wednesday at the bottom end of the championship.
He didn't become a PL regular keeper until 26. Hes now a world cup winner and seen as one of the best is the league. There will be dozens of examples like this.
Ellborg isn't ready, but writing him off is absolutely pathetic and sums this place up. People had written off rigg the other week at 18.
Martinez, you're using one of the best keepers in the world as a benchmark, Very unfair. You’re allowed to look at the attributes of a young player and decide they’re not going to make it we don’t have to believe that every player is going to make it
I’m a believer in giving people time to develop and am not one of those that thinks Rigg won’t make it I just don’t think Ellborg is going to
People like Martinez showed better promise than Ellborg is
Fair enough. Pointless going round and round in circles. You’re allowed to look at the attributes of a young player and decide they’re not going to make it we don’t have to believe that every player is going to make it

Like I've just said above, Martinez didn't become a PL regular until 26 but people want to write off Ellborg after about 400 minutes.Martinez, you're using one of the best keepers in the world as a benchmark, Very unfair.
Whatever happens the decisions will be made with Matty Young in mind. 2 years time and he'll be out number 1, no doubt about it.
Personally I think the club will do everything possible to hold onto Roefs for one more year, then let him go with Matty waiting to step in.

Ellborg was brought in for peanuts and will either contribute long term or they'll probably get a profit on him anyway.
Not sure why we need a thread to decide right now about him.
Yes but in those 2 minutes some of the resident experts on here have fully evaluated the lad and concluded that he's never going to be good enough.Lads been here 2 minutes and been thrust into the first team, he's done fine when called upon and looks a good prospect...but let's just write him straight off ffs.
When Patterson was the same age as Ellborg, he'd just had a loan finished in the conference and came back to Sunderland.
Yep. The lads done fine. There’s no doubt Roefs is better with his feet currently, people conveniently forget Roefs has made some errors on the ball too, Bournemouth away being one obvious one.Fans desperate to write off young players again
Haway man, I'm not going to delve right into the monthsThat's not really true at all though is it?
Ellborg is 22 years and 11 months old.
When Patterson was 22 years and 11 months old, he'd been back from his loan at Notts County for over a year, and he was approaching the end of his first season as number 1 keeper for us in the Championship, during which he played every game, having broken through the year before in League One. He'd played the best part of 75 games as our number 1 keeper for us. He was very well established at that point.
People are going on like this is him and the finished product of what he can be. Can't get my head around it at all.Yep. The lads done fine. There’s no doubt Roefs is better with his feet currently, people conveniently forget Roefs has made some errors on the ball too, Bournemouth away being one obvious one.
He’s come in away to Leeds and the mags and done well.
