Matty Young .

How many Championship clubs will offer him the opportunity to be first choice keeper though?

Do we put him in the Champ and accept another season like last where he is likely a No.2 for most of the season or make sure he gets game time?

Exactly. No Championship club that isnt an absolute shit show will loan a 19 year old keeper next August and put him in as first choice.

So you make a choice based on his progression and the club., rather than just the level. Too many on here just think all our kids willl walk into loans at championship sides. It just doesnt work like that.

exactly ...

if this progression was good enough for Jordan Pickford ... then it's good enough for Young ...
2011–2017 31(0)
2012 (loan)17(0)
2013 (loan)12(0)
2013→ (loan)12(0)
2014→ (loan)18(0)
2014–2015→ (loan)33(0)
2015–2016→ (loan)24(0)
2017–319

so Pickford was an 18 years old at Darlington ... 21 /22 years old or so in the Championship with Sunderland by 2016 ... August 2017 Premiership debut he'd be about 23 years old.. Matty Young is doing okay at the minute

Pickford made his debut at Darlington as a 17 year old. He was 21 when he made his debut in the Championship for Preston, and also when he made his debut in the PL for us (after being recalled from loan in January 2016). Hence he is one of the few players to have already played in all of the top 5 English leagues as a 21 year old. He was 22 at the start of our 2016/17 relegation season. He never played for us in the Championship, he left when we went down. To be fair, although he was relatively well regarded, there wasn’t much real hype about him until he got into our side and quickly looked the part - let’s not forget that he started the Moyes season as number 2, and only got his chance when Mannone got injured.

If Salford go up, then I think Matty Young will stay with them for another season, if they don’t, then I think he’ll be at somewhere like Bradford or Bolton on loan.

Not much hype?

Pickford was getting absolutely rave reviews from every single loan he had. Every set of fans from those clubs commented on him being the best keeper to have ever played for them and that he’d be a future England international.

Pickford had every top club in the country after him. He was in our first team training environment at 16. He was always regarded as a future top class keeper but pickford needed to fill out and grow into his body where as Young is already a specimen and much more developed physically at that age them Pickford was

A bit of hindsight hype there perhaps. Preston fans saying that after 20 games he was the best keeper to have ever played for them 🤣🤣🤣

As I said, he was well regarded but there wasn’t a lot of hype at the time. Even we were happy at the time that Mannone started that season as first choice.

Pickford was massively well thought of. He played for England at every age group and Sunderland took him away for a pre season when he was about 16/17. The other poster is right he was a massive success at every club he went on loan at. It was almost assumed he would end up as Sunderland and England number 1

He kept ten clean sheets in a row and had really eye catching distribution. So, aye they thought he was class and a future England number 1.

I don’t deny that. But their best ever goalkeeper??? Haway man, it would be like us saying that Shay Given was our best ever goalkeeper after the 20 games he played for us in the second division.

The "competing to be first choice" thing doesn't make sense to me. There would never be a point of bringing him back to the club to sit on the bench imo.

At best, we probably have 1 more season of Roefs and it would have to be a rapid acceleration in development from him to be a Premier League keeper 18 months from now, so the timing probably isn't going to align.

If somehow we can keep Roefs for a further 2 seasons, then Young should be ready as his replacement.

This^

Some people really need to do a little in-depth research before mocking others and then looking clueless.

Think he needs a championship loan next year personally, or at the very least a January break clause in league 1 if he’s getting serious interest from the championship at that point.

With the Pickford comparisons worth remembering what Darlington fans thought of him in relation to Pickford.

We got Given at similar age and he was 3rd choice at Blackburn and came in as our number 1 and done class
