Matty Young .

Would be the sensible route or a European club if one was interested. If Salford (sorry Swindon) go up via the play offs and no decent championship options were open he could go back there for 6 months.

I know we have to plan for the future but we seem to have 3 good keepers on our books and all are young, scary having sensible people in charge at the club.

We have 5.

Roefs
Elborg
Young
Patterson
Cowan

I expect Cowan to do a loan either National League or League 2 next season

Patterson I suspect will be sold

I actually think Simon Moore may get another year, as 3rd choice/Keeper Coach with one of academy sides

Young or Elborg will be loaned out

Roefs number 1 (under the assumption Chelsea dont spunk their load on him)

It would be useful if our GK was a homegrown player…would take one of the spaces up for years…..that’s why I don’t really understand why we signed Ellborg.
Having watched him mostly through open fingers it makes even less sense. Awful with the ball at his feet, heavy first touch and very slow to take the next one. Personally don’t see any upgrade on Patto.

Tbf he's very highly rated throughout Europe and has a very similar profile to Roefs and also has European experience etc. I get what your saying but think it's fairly obvious he's got a lot of talent but agree not ready to be thrust into the team as first choice. Been a little bit nervy but also pulled off some cracking saves.
Wouldn't want him first choice just yet but think your being a bit harsh on him personally. All about opinions though and you've got some valid points

Possibly
Patterson will be away permanently this summer, surely?

Too many variables. Very possibly

To be fair he has only conceded 2 in 3 and the Brighton one was a fluke.

Yes he needs to get up to speed with the pace of the PL but he is still very young. I think he would be a lot better with a few more games.

If there are any legs on the Roefs to Chelsea story then it wouldn’t surprise me if Ellborg kept his place to get more game time.

Whatever happens we need to buy a keeper, I doubt Young is anywhere near Prem ready yet and needs to continue to develop, Ellborg needs games / experience and probably needs a loan. I doubt many would want him as 1st choice for any length of time. He may turn out to be a very good keeper but he is simply not ready yet. If Roefs is sold it just makes the situation even more urgent.

And you’re judging him on how many games!

Getting POTY nominations in L2, then you'd think a Champ club would snap our hands off for him.
I don't even think its a massive jump - I thought he should have went L1 this season, and said so on here. He'd already proved he was good enough for L2, and some.
I read somewhere there was a lower end league 1 club willing to take him but the club thought it would be more beneficial for him to go back to an environment he's comfortable and familiar with and would be able to compete at the top end of the table.

He definitiely needs a championship loan next season though.

If you look at Pickfords route:

Burton (League 2) - 12 games (league)
Carlisle (League 1) - 18 games
Bradford (League 1) 33 games
Preston (championship) 24 games

He played 63 games at league 1/2 before championship. If Young plays the last 4 games this season he'll have 64 league 2 games under his belt. He's ready for that test at championship level. I'd love us to keep Roefs for one more season and then hopefully the year after Ellborg and Young could battle it out for the shirt

He's also been thrown in to 2 of the most difficult games to play in as a sunderland keeper. Leeds away "under the lights" and mags away. Plenty would have crumbled. He made solid saves in both games

There's definitively a good keeper in there

Yeah, we had that very convo on these boards about it. I said it was, hmm, curious he went back to the same level when the plan is development through the levels. As you say, there was a feeling Salford was comfy for him, and they had somewhat moved up at least half a level themselves.
Champ loan or at least a top end L1 next season though.

why would you elborg loaned out. That madness.
He is the next line to play in PL next season if roefs sold.

Because he needs a change to develop, just like Patto. If Roeffs stays, its a tough choice which one of the 2 warms the bench and which goes out on loan. Could almost make a deal with a club to take each for 1/2 the season.
If Roeffs goes, I'm not convinced the club will want either as outright 1st choice either. They dropped Patto decicively, and Elborg hasn't impressed, let's be honest.

Because he's simply not ready to be a 1st choice in the prem unless he improves a lot during his summer holidays, or we ship goals we have got away with it for the most part.

Thats why, also if Chelsea use Penders as a make weight for deal he'll be number 1

Young would benefit from a Championship club loan. Birmingham/Leicester
Moore stays as back up/goalkeeping mentor/coach
Elborg. Needs more time before judging him

I'd actually keep Patterson as no. 2 and loan Ellborg out. Moore as no. 3

This fills to of our domestic squad places for next season and frees up a space for a foreign player
