Getting Rudolph would be a great addition to the top order but it won't solve all the problems we have with our top 4. Even with Rudolph in the side we'd still have an "open" end at the start of the innings. I'm hoping Jennings can learn and adapt quickly to life at the top and we start seeing some positive performances from him.
Rocky is a bit of a puzzle, he looks good getting to 20 or 30 and then gets himself out just as you think hes set.
And Smith, well for me he's started off where Muchy finished, which is a shame as I think they are both good cricketers who've both been played in a position where they're on a hiding to nothing.
There's a quote in the Rudolph piece where someone says
"You can live with an average performance from a younger player a lot longer than you can live with an average performance from an older player."
It begs the question about Benks performances this season, which to be fair are not even average.
I like Benks a lot, both as a bloke and a cricketer and no one will be more disappointed with the start he's made than he is. I'm hoping its just an early season blip and he starts scoring the runs we're used to from him, but even he can't go on for ever and a few more low scores might make him decide enough is enough midway through the season like so many great batsman have done in the past, Diva, Botham, Gooch, Rampakash just to name a few, I think all retired mid season.
If the worst happens and Benks decides stepping down is for the good of the team, then in the current situation he'd be impossible to replace. Benks isn't a quitter and he's played on through the pain for the team these last couple of seasons, but can he play on if its not to his usual high standards?
