LVCC D1 - Durham v Middlesex

I don't think its so much getting rid of the old guard, but getting rid of players that arent good enough which we seem to be doing. Add Much to the get rid list, maybe Smith and we might be alright.

I'm not sure about Rocky but I'd persist with him

Rocky will be persisted with (see my Q & A thread).

Selectors need to grow a pair.

Age isn't the problem.

The thing is, it isn't the 'old guard' that is the problem. In the sense that their performances haven't been as bad as some, the only problem I have with the old guard is that they are getting older and we need to start looking for replacements. We clearly haven't been able to replace Diva and as it stands we've got nothing capable of replacing Benk and Colly who lets face it, will be going/gone within the next 3 years.

The young/middle guard are the problem, they're the underacheivers - Stoneman, Smith, Muchall and Stokes are all having bad seasons, of that list I'd only keep Stokes tbh. Then the likes of Richardson, Jennings, Singh, Harrison, are playing out of their skins in the seconds but Cook won't give them a look in .

I was particularly pissed off with Cook saying the pitch/wicket/conditions at Durham have been bad all year - they have Geoff, but that should be a slight advantage to us, being able to play on it every other week should give us an edge. ALSO, our batting has still been wank away from home.

--------------

Anyway, to seperate that from this - as I gather my thoughts and look towards Day 2 of the game in hand, agree with safcdccc - batting was as usual shit and the bowling good. Borthwick claiming the 7th wicket last night could be massive for us, if we can finish them off sharpish this morning, say for a deficit of less than 70 then I think we still have a chance. Granted it would mean we need to turn up with the bat for a change, but I'd fancy us to defend anything over 270 in the fourth innings.

Smith and Stoneman fail again, could be over inside two days this......

f***ing wank.

32-2 at Lunch, trailing by 51.

Muchall out, hopefully for the last time in a Durham shirt.

Cant believe this lad is a frontline batsman and has been playing county cricket for 10 years and only averages 28... LOVE IT

Saying that, 28 is about 3 times what he has managed this season

Just sat waiting for the game to restart. Only a matter of time before it ends and most people here would rather it ended today. Painful viewing again.

Thorp and borthwick going mad here.

Im confused - has richardson has a good game?

he top scored in our first innings - great.

he only scored 22

the lead is over 100, haway lads we can win this, or at least make it agonisingly close like at sussex, which is worse being put our of your misery or having your hopes build up before cruelly sneaking a hard fought loss?

58-5 at the Close. Middlesex need 60 to win. It's fair to say the bowlers have stepped up to the plate YET AGAIN. Unfortunately I can't see them being able to pull this one out the bag. Another defeat, another pair of failures from Durham batsmen and relegation now inevitable.

Just got back, wow, what a crazy day that was

Sitting in the members lounge during the rain break we were 7 wickets down with a lead of about 40 runs and the general feeling was everyone just wanted the game over with and us put out of our misery.

Thorp and Borthwick resume and went absolutely crazy, put on 60 runs in about 8 overs. They quickly shut up the gobby, arrogant Middlesex fans up who were rude and ignorant most of the day, they were further shut up during their 2nd innings.

Got to mention Steve Finn, very dis-honest about a boundary which was clearly a 4, and he just shrugged his shoulders and got away with it. Don't think he appreciated what a few of us shouted at him though

Close game now but once again we are grateful to the bowlers and the old guard both with the bat and the ball.

Benks batted really well this afternoon as did Thorp who also bowled superbly well. Collingwood got his captaincy spot on as well with the field and bowling choices today so credit to them.

Muchall has failed again, so if Cook is true to his word about having to earn your place, he should be dropped. Smith is also on thin ice, though he took an excellent catch to get rid of Rogers.

Borthwick and Thorp were excellent to watch with the bat, just good solid aggressive batting which Benks started off.

We're in with a good chance in the morning.

Richardson batted very well yesterday and the ball that got him today simply stayed low, the best in the world could do nothing with it, just totally unplayable.

He's kept wicket very well, made no mistakes and took 3 catches in the first innings. He'll get a run in the side and I'm pleased about that as he's worth a good run in the team.

If we can break the current partnership early in the morning we will have a very good chance although Durham always seem to let the tail wag.

Does anyone know if they are charging for entry tomorrow? Don't fancy paying full whack to see an hours play even if we win.

Someone else mentioned to me about the Finn incident.....that is the lowest of the low from a so called International player who had gone all around the park....

Was right in front of where I was sat, had a clear view of it, I was in the lower block of the county durham stand in the corner near the media centre. He got a bit of stick off a fair few others as well as myself, hate to see that in the game. He just shrugged his shoulders as if to say he wasn't sure when it was so clear he hit and moved the rope back at least half a metre. 100% boundary, just a shame he was so dis-honest.
