Luke O'Nien


Congratulations Luke.

Le Bris and the Club have demonstrated very clearly that sentiment plays no part in the selection of players. The majority of the Lads who worked very hard to win us promotion have found themselves put to one side and yet Regis and KLD have consistently said that Luke remains part of the plan and has a role to play. I am sure that it's not going to be the role that he played before we got to the Premier League but they appear to be quite confident that Luke can do a job for us.

Rather then being "soft touches" I think the le Bris, Speakman and Florent Ghisolfi have a very a clear idea what they want from each player. There's no way the Luke is named in the squad simply because he a nice bloke of they feel sorry for him. He only had five or six minutes last night and even the best player in world wouldn't be firing of all cylinders in such short a time. No sensible person would attempt to judge him on his performance after such a brief appearance. We don't even know what instructions he was given when he came on and at they stage of the game they would have been very specific.

100%. They say he’s been given a contract out of sentimentality while simultaneously ignoring the fact that almost the entire squad from last season has been changed. Yet here O’Nien right in the middle of things still.

Absolutely love the bloke and I’m over the moon he’s still here and playing.

He’s some character, and you know he just loves being part of the team still, even though naturally he’s slid down the pecking order. You watch him warm up and he’s absolutely thriving, looks like a kid playing in the park, there was a moment when warming up yesterday and the Liverpool players came out for the first time to a medium scale round of applause to which he started clapping and waving to as if it was for him 🤣 which creased the players he was warming up with, then when he came on, he ran straight over to salah, grabbed his shirt in the chest area a few time ls and caused salah to retaliate As if to say what the fuck 🤣
You just know that his contribution behind the scenes helping all the new lads settle in has been priceless. We may now not get value out of him on the pitch, but what he does off it is magnificent

That he might have difficulty fitting straight into the pace of the game and look a bit awkward as a centre half on the left side of midfield is not really surprising.
To suggest he looked lost is to totally underestimate the man’s intelligence and awareness on the football pitch.
He knew exactly what was expected of him and he slotted in just fine.
 
Yet some on here said last season he was a better centre half than Ballard. 😂

Good luck to him though. On a massive stage he came on and did his bit. 👏
 
echoing a lot of comments on here, but genuinely over the moon for him just a shame it wasn’t at the SOL in front of a sold out crowd.

the fact that he’s worked his way up from isthmian prem to the premier league in just over 10 years has to be commended - regardless of whether he’s now classed as a squad player or not.

you’d expect him to see out his playing days with us and move into coaching the young uns, a proper asset to the club

Perhaps I was a tad harsh, as I said it was class to see him get on the pitch.

Was subdued to be honest. The whole away end was. I think people didn't really believe what they were seeing when he was stood ready to come on.

When he gets on the pitch at the SoL he'll get a proper reception

I was at founders bar at the stadium and the whole room cheered and applauded. Proud as fuck.
