Latest boxing crack

Just watched the stoppage.
Ref was trying to get in, but hadn't stopped it, as the bell went. He then got between them after the bell and stopped it.
Really poor.
Lad deserved the chance to recover on his stool.

Lifelong boxing fan - hardly allow a bad word about it.

But that was clearly dodgy as fuck. No other rational explanation.

Scorecards? Oh f***ing yes. Stoppage. Pathetic. Weren’t going to let the lad have a fair crack unless he sparked him dead.
If the scorecards didn't have Rico ahead going into 11, then yes that would have been ridiculous.

But let's not pretend that Rico didn't have his head spun off, and was then given 25 seconds to recover while stumbling around a gumshield, only to return to the right and get bladdered into the corner again. He shouldn't have stopped it at that daft time in the round, just let him have a minute on the stool and then stop it in the 12th if he was still getting a leathering.

There's a lot of people getting irrational because they're upset Rico lost, despite doing really well against a completely out-of-sorts Usyk.

If I were Usyk, I'd be having a good old think about whether to just pack it in now. He looked really bad, I've never seen him look so slow and static. Maybe it's just left him.

I thought similar watching it live in real time, that the ref was stepping in to stop the fighting because the bell had gone. Not to call the fight off.
Looking back at the replays though and he was pretty much gone, especially given the way he staggered to the corner to put his gun shield back in. However, should have been given the chance to try and make it through the 12th.

Scorecards poor in my opinion and also think ref was very eager to stop it.

Would have been amazed if Usyk didn’t stop him though.

While Usyk miles from his best, for whatever reason, it’s clear that Rico will cause a lot of top heavyweights problems.
Think he caught Usyk at the right time tbh. People forget he's 39 year old, he's older than most great were when they retired, most of which were shot to shit.

Kickboxer might be able to cross over well but everyone said the same about Ngannou and then he got absolutely wiped out in fight 2 against a version of Joshua that was likely shot to pieces himself.

We shall see what happens but I'd welcome Rico V a few of the contenders to get a gage. Stick him in with Zhang, that might be an interesting one.

I'm certainly not irrational about Rico losing.

I watched it expecting Usyk to end it early on a " I was a great kickboxer, but want to pretend I'm a boxer to make money " hyped up character, and expected Usyk to put him in his place.

However, only one bloke came out of that fight with any respect IMHO.... and it wasn't Usyk.

If they DO have a return fight... . let's make it a kickboxing contest !

  • Haha
Reactions: PTR
Will be ineresting to see if Verhoeven is actually decent or whether it's another Ngannou type scenario where he gets annihilated by the first decent heavyweight who actually takes him seriously.
Aye, regardless he looks a big old unit who looks like he can bang.

Pretty much how I saw it. I hope Usyk quits before he loses. His boxing style ain't easy for a bloke approaching 40 to keep up.

Usyk didn't take this seriously enough. But round 11 was obviously 10-8 Usyk, and if it had continued I think we'd have seen another knockdown at the least as Rico was done, so a points win for Usyk wouldn't been fine.

You are talking like this ending was mercer v Tommy Morrison. Your description of the stoppage is minging imho.

Rico had it won, scorecards were embarrassing for boxing, imho.

The stoppage was cringe a way way too obvious.

It’s a bad look, simple as that. No wonder everyday sports fans are pissing themselves at this.

Due to the Usyk stuff it's gone under the radar but Richard Torres Jnr who was a big prospect at heavyweight got absolutely iron out by Frank Sanchez last night.

What was inaccurate? Usyk nearly took his head off with an uppercut, which sent him falling face-first almost out of the ring. He was then given an EXTRAORDINARY amount of time to recover and get a gumshield in - where he could barely walk to his corner.

He then resumed the fight, and took about 8 unanswered punches as he fell into the corner. What's inaccurate about that? Nothing. Is that grounds for stopping a fight? Yes.

Do I think he think he SHOULD have stopped it? No. Given the time on the clock, I'd have let it go to the 12th and if the one-way traffic continues then you have a duty to stop it.

I disagree with the referee stopping it, but there's nothing untoward about it. It's a perfectly reasonable option, given what happened. Its not the referee's job to care as much as we do about how many seconds are left. He gives Rico way more recovery time than he needed to as well, like i said.

It ended up being a really compelling watch tbh. Rico was way more effective than I thought he'd be, and Usyk was the worst I've ever seen him - and I've seem every fight of his going back to Breidis. He was worryingly bad, like 'time to retire' levels of bad. He was good for about 3 rounds.

You're not wrong there, the ref probably shouldn't have let him continue after the first knockdown. His legs simple were not working. Even after 25 seconds etc etc.
But stopping it when he did, after the bell - that was just wrong, he had a minute to recover and then basically run away for a round to get what should have been a win.

And I would have cleaned up on the dodgy majority draw decision that was coming, bastards!
