Me dad knows Phil Curtis from the Sunderland Antiquarian Society and I've just asked him about this area of the city. It was seemingly and previously known as Galley's Gill - there was both a school and a graveyard down there.

Should perhaps be Galley's Bridge?

Galleys gill bridge is still there it's a separate entity

I think this is the same place as the area where the bridge is - happy to stand corrected if not.

No for me after reading all suggestions so far I would pick Keel footbridge because of it linking into the keel line and Keel Square. I do feel the City should recognise Pallion lad Joseph Swan but not sure this is appropriate.

Whether intentional or otherwise, the bridge construction (deep steel channel) isn’t too far from that of a ships hull.

I agree. He has been remembered with at least two roads/streets named after him. He will not be forgotten.

I'd never suggest that on the Facebook posts though. They would basically liken you to someone spitting on his grave.

It says in that article that the bridge connects the north and south sides of the river. Which given the location of the river and the purpose of a bridge, was exactly the right design choice IMHO

The new footbridge looks like it's constructed from the same stuff as the Gateshead flyover.
