Keel Crossing [opened 18.10.25] - compendium thread

Me dad knows Phil Curtis from the Sunderland Antiquarian Society and I've just asked him about this area of the city. It was seemingly and previously known as Galley's Gill - there was both a school and a graveyard down there.

Should perhaps be Galley's Bridge?

It should be The Vaux Footbridge, really. Simple , and people are practically calling it that anyway.

They'll probably end up going with the Quantum Gangplank or some shite
Vaux isn't "inclusive"
It'll need to reflect the current influx and our proud LGBT heritage.
And we can't leave the mags out., they've done so much for Sunderland
We could call it The Sir Kier.

I think this is the same place as the area where the bridge is - happy to stand corrected if not.

That’s correct, the Gill is to the south of the Bridge but there is already a bridge linking Vaux to Deptford called that, or at least known as that since I was a kid.
There’s just as much history on the Vaux site itself with Roman occupation or industry on the north side to be drawn from.

Actually, would be good if the Roman word for the Wear could be incorporated somehow.
