I don't look down on Jordan Henderson. As I have explained I just don't think he is the right type of role model for our youngsters to look up to. Don't you see the difference? He made a big thing about gay rights, equal opportunities and he was (quite rightly) plauded for it and admired hugely by many people. Then he tossed all of that away to seek $$ millions in Saudi - a country well known for its appalling record on gay rights, human rights in general and the way they treat women. The fact that he may or may not have actually earned any money in the end is irrelevant. he chose to go there.

How do you know I have never met the guy? All you can say for certain is that you have never met me (thank goodness!) You also have no idea whether or not I have spoken to his friends, family, team mates of business associates. You don't have a fecking clue about that.

I have never thought, written, implied or said I am superior to Jordan Henderson. I simply think we could have a better role model in place as our captain.

My life has nothing to do with whether we should sign Jordan Henderson. That is a really odd thing for you to write. I would never take money from Saudi - whether that is the state or a private company that runs a football club. I suppose we all have different ethics and morals and we just need to make our own choices.

Absolutely respect your moral stance and it's probably a sad reflection on modern life that money talks and principles are so easily bought. Mine included. I've got absolutely know idea where or what my pension fund is invested in. I'm appalled by the middle east conflict but I'd quite like to have loads of wedge when I retire so make no effort to ensure it's in no way connected knowing fine well that war/fear is profitable. Totally compromised.
What I would say in defence of Henderson is that plenty of others have and still do make the same error of judgement (Ivan Toney, Ronaldo) and are exposed to only a fraction of the criticism Henderson receives. Probably because he's a hypocrite. But he's only one of those by virtue of having previously spoken up on gay rights, when he didn't have to (not sure if he benefitted in any way). It feels harsh that he's been singled out because he's the good guy turned bad as opposed to others who've never used their profile for any good but their own. In the context that being a top level sportsperson must include a fair degree of selfishness.
Sometimes the best role models are those who've made mistakes, which others can learn from.
PS my 99% comment was based on footballing reasons only, i.e. if you didn't know who the player was only that he was a current England international and had experience of captaining winning EPL and ECL sides then 99% would say sign him up.
