John Herdman

Anyone know him or his history at SAFC?
There was a thread on him not so long ago, alot of what you need to know is in there

Despite his mag leaning I wish him the best of luck. It would be a phenomenal achievement for someone with no real playing career to speak of to get a country like Canada to a world cup.

Mag, not as good at football as he thought he was, bomb scare, team he played for as a youngun got hammered every week by the team i played for, sister was a WAD

@Steak Pie - have i missed anything??

He didn't play to a high level, not even semi-professional, which was what he was getting at in the OP article. He started coaching kids in his late teens/early 20s, was very good at it and everything built from there. He was a bit daft in his formative years but he turned a corner and is completely thorough & meticulous in what he does.

A little bit of history has been re-written there. He was quite neutral until his mid-late teens. He gave Sunderland a go but when he was in the Fulwell end he thought it would be funny to rub crisp crumbs in some random fella's hair in front of him. The fella in front of him didn't find it funny, turned around & lamped him so that put him off Sunderland. Shortly afterwards the Keegan bandwagon rolled into Newcastle and he jumped on that.
So he’s a mag then.

Canada haven't qualified since 1986, good effort.
We'll see loads of shit teams qualifying as they keep increasing the total.
Especially in regions outside Europe.
We'll probably live to see every country playing at the finals one day.

Sounds like a fun/quirky character who has achieved a lot against the odds. Don't think he's coming here though

Could be in the North East if gathering rumours are true
He's just beaten USA 2-0 & barring a bizarre set of results in the next 4 games Canada are pretty much qualified for the world cup. Cant see him walking out when he has a chance to make history & be the first coach to take a women's team & a man's team to a world cup

Job is as good as done there, can take a league managers job now with time off in the winter for international duty

Does anyone know who he's referring to in this article?

“I will never forget there was an ex-England player, who was at the time in the England youth coaching system, and I was coaching his son at Sunderland,” he said.

“I’ll never forget him: he stopped me and he said: ‘Look John, you’re a really good teacher-coach. I wish I had the teaching skill you had but the one thing you’ll never have is that experience of standing in a field in front of 60,000 people.’

“And he said: ‘That’s why you’ll never get to the highest level.’ It’s always stuck in the back of my mind: my God, I want to prove you wrong. I won’t name names but it’s always stuck with me.”

Football is 90% who you know and not what you know when it comes to academy football. If someone knows you and rates you then you've a job for life. A lot of coaches have to volunteer for 6-12 months without pay before they're given anything by a club, particularly in lower leagues.
