John Herdman

I just googled him, can't be before our time as he's 46. He must've been in the youth teams maybe? Born in Consett

Strange a year younger than me and I can't recall hearing of him - especially given back then I was probably more on the ball and aware of those coming through, probably about Russell, M Smith and Brodie time.

Don't think he was ever on the books as a player, he was coaching as a teenager IIRC. Couple of years below me at school.

@General Zod will know.

He didn't play to a high level, not even semi-professional, which was what he was getting at in the OP article. He started coaching kids in his late teens/early 20s, was very good at it and everything built from there. He was a bit daft in his formative years but he turned a corner and is completely thorough & meticulous in what he does.
Mag. Fuck him
A little bit of history has been re-written there. He was quite neutral until his mid-late teens. He gave Sunderland a go but when he was in the Fulwell end he thought it would be funny to rub crisp crumbs in some random fella's hair in front of him. The fella in front of him didn't find it funny, turned around & lamped him so that put him off Sunderland. Shortly afterwards the Keegan bandwagon rolled into Newcastle and he jumped on that.

Up the maple leafs! Another big game vs mexico this week. Drew with them in Mexico. Now it's in cold cold Edmonton.

Supposed to be about -10C at kickoff, possible snow earlier in the day. Absolute perfect planning by the Canadians.

And regardless of his allegances, Herdman has done a great job in Canada. Fortunate on the men's side to arrive as Davies and David were reaching full boil, but he hasn't screwed it up. As bad as Canada has been for most of the last 30 years, that's an accomplishment.

The pitch was garbage vs Costa Rica, could have had one in BC with nice grass and whooped them. Then taken the mexicans to Edmonton for the cold.

(I live on the border of Alberta and BC)

I had no idea he worked at Sunderland, but credit to him, for someone with no playing career to speak of he's put a lot of work into getting the job he's in.

Sounds more like he's talking about opportunities for coaches in the English game, mentioning there were good coaches here but they didn't get a chance to progress in the game because of the culture in English football rather than the club being shite.

That is how I read the article too, more a dig at the system than SAFC.

....but he is a County Durham Mag, so who knows

Wasnt so cocky when he got arrested at Newcastle airport
TBF he was a kid with a paper round at the time and asked if he could see the cockpit and said it as a joke which blew up on him(pardon the pun). It hit the national news. Was our paper boy and said at the time it was something he regrets and was very embarrassed about.

I watched the Costa Rica game and Canada have some very technically gifted players. Also great athletes and look very dangerous. Their downfall against better teams will be defending I suspect.

Should be a great game tonight Im very much looking forward to it. Herdman seems very popular here and did a great job with the Canadian ladies from what I can gather too

I have heard in the past that football is far too often who you know in the UK. That's very anecdotal but wouldn't surprise me either. I seem to remember Ged McNamee's son getting a stay at the academy even though it was clear he was well below the level.

And it’s not a very well paid job.

He's doing really well with the Canadian men's national team, but seems bitter about his time at SAFC. Interesting that he talks about us having great coaches who weren't given any opportunities to progress. What happened to him? Did he quit or get the bullet? I don't remember him at all.

he taught me at primary school, he may or may not have been training or qualified, remember he liked the term "young man", don't know if this was before or after the incident on a plane.

Best of luck to the lad.

"I didn't play at the highest level and, in my earliest years in coaching, that was relayed to me quite frequently. It develops a mentality of working harder to prove you are at that level.”

That’s an interesting snippet.
