Well it’s not, is it? As I said paddie’s day. As in the Day of St Patrick. Who was a) called Patrick and b) not Irish. So it’s a) Accurately using an acceptable nickname and b) note referring to anyone Irish.

If you’re not sure of the points I’ve made it’s probably because you struggle with understanding the things you read. That’s become pretty evident.
 

Went to a party a few year back and mate of mine went as BA from the A team. Looked class and in my personal opinion wasn’t racist. Going as a ‘lucky lucky’ man is offensive/racist in my opinion due to the negative stereotype you are portraying

Plenty will disagree and say no distinction between the two but I would argue there is

That said here and now - probably around 8/9 year later, regardless of my views on whether a BA fancy dress for a white bloke is racist or not I wouldn’t even consider risking it.

I think it's ridiculous to say it's outright racist. But then it comes down to what you are doing with your costume. If you dress as Jules from Pulp Fiction, your favourite black footballer or singer it's daft to say that's racist. But I can easily see how using a stereotype like the looky looky man could be classed as it.

As if painting your face has now been officially acknowledged on the SMB as “Blacking Up”. Will it be in next years Oxford Dictionary?

What about if you go on holiday to let’s say a country of Arabic heritage and dress up as a local. Is that racist?

Increasingly, no. With an increasing number of good black actors to choose from, producers will get at least raised eyebrows if they choose to cast a white actor. However, it's worth pointing out that Shakespeare described Othello as a "Moor". In Elizabethan England, that simply meant someone originating from anywhere on the African continent, meaning Othello could be Arabic as well as African.

I’m still amazed people are missing the difference between dressing as a specific film character, actor, sportsman or whatever, and mocking a stereotype about African migrants to Europe.

On stage, albeit not in film yet, colour of skin is increasingly less important. In the Globe's production of Othello last year, Othello was played by a black man as you would expect, but several other members of the cast including Iago's wife were also black - not because the producer was making any point, but just because they deemed were the best people for the job.

And I don't think there was much doubt that Othello was black, whatever the general meaning of Moors. Early on, Iago says:
Even now, now, very now, an old black ram
Is tupping your white ewe.
Referring to Othello and Desdemona.
