Which is exactly what you did

I don't even know what points you've made, I doubt you do tbh.

Well it’s not, is it? As I said paddie’s day. As in the Day of St Patrick. Who was a) called Patrick and b) not Irish. So it’s a) Accurately using an acceptable nickname and b) note referring to anyone Irish.

If you’re not sure of the points I’ve made it’s probably because you struggle with understanding the things you read. That’s become pretty evident.

Went to a party a few year back and mate of mine went as BA from the A team. Looked class and in my personal opinion wasn’t racist. Going as a ‘lucky lucky’ man is offensive/racist in my opinion due to the negative stereotype you are portraying

Plenty will disagree and say no distinction between the two but I would argue there is

That said here and now - probably around 8/9 year later, regardless of my views on whether a BA fancy dress for a white bloke is racist or not I wouldn’t even consider risking it.

It's a thin line you walk if 'blacking up'.

I think it's ridiculous to say it's outright racist. But then it comes down to what you are doing with your costume. If you dress as Jules from Pulp Fiction, your favourite black footballer or singer it's daft to say that's racist. But I can easily see how using a stereotype like the looky looky man could be classed as it.

Naive more than being racist mind.

As if painting your face has now been officially acknowledged on the SMB as “Blacking Up”. Will it be in next years Oxford Dictionary?

What about if you go on holiday to let’s say a country of Arabic heritage and dress up as a local. Is that racist?

But it's ok to black up to play Othello ?

Increasingly, no. With an increasing number of good black actors to choose from, producers will get at least raised eyebrows if they choose to cast a white actor. However, it's worth pointing out that Shakespeare described Othello as a "Moor". In Elizabethan England, that simply meant someone originating from anywhere on the African continent, meaning Othello could be Arabic as well as African.

If you don a dish dash and respectfully go about your business, no.
If you don a dish dash, mock the accent, ask people if they would swap their wife for your camel then aye probably is.

I’m still amazed people are missing the difference between dressing as a specific film character, actor, sportsman or whatever, and mocking a stereotype about African migrants to Europe.

On stage, albeit not in film yet, colour of skin is increasingly less important. In the Globe's production of Othello last year, Othello was played by a black man as you would expect, but several other members of the cast including Iago's wife were also black - not because the producer was making any point, but just because they deemed were the best people for the job.

And I don't think there was much doubt that Othello was black, whatever the general meaning of Moors. Early on, Iago says:
Even now, now, very now, an old black ram
Is tupping your white ewe.
Referring to Othello and Desdemona.

The problem I have with the idea of "blacking up is always wrong" is that it isn't a new idea. Anyone see the film "The Book Thief"? Fictional, I know, but the principle is exactly as it would have been. A young German lad, blond hair, would make a good Aryan, and wanted to be a sprinter. He saw the Berlin Olympics, he really admired Jesse Owens, and he wanted to become Jesse Owens. So not only did he practice his running, but he also got some shoe polish and blacked himself up. The Nazis, predictably enough, were as outraged then as many people would be today.

Any time that we're standing side by side with Adolf Hitler, we need to think again about whether we are really doing the right thing.

What the fuck have I just read?

You saying just cos Adolf didn't like blacking up it means it's okay to do it?

Nothing like someone blacking up to get the racists to come out of their shells.

The amount on this thread are ludicrous.

To all you racists on this thread. You know who you are. Just think you have @Jay @Mr David @Cox Green Fc @Mrjardine on your side of the argument. That should tell you everything you need to know.

In 2018 there are no circumstances I can think of where "blacking up" can realistically be anything other than provocative at the least and intentionally racist at the other extreme. The notion that anyone would do it without recognising the possible implications is difficult to comprehend but it is possible he is that much of an idiot. Nobody needs to black up, it's stupid, isn't funny and belongs in the past.

Klingon at a scifi convention?

A good old racism thread is the best way for this place to totally show them selves up / expose themselves as the utter idiots they are.

Always sad to be a Sunderland fan when I read these threads
