so bowling 18.5 overs in an innings on soft run ups in the main isnt great preperation for bowling up to 30 overs an innings on much harder run ups

He hasn't bowled 30 overs an innings yet and most likely won't while he continues to go at 5 an over. You could argue he needed more overs under his belt but you are complaining that it was down to poor opposition, and while the opposition weren't great, would you rather England had sent down a few half volleys to make sure they were in the field a bit longer?.

I'm sure when McGrath, Gillespie and Warne were rolling through sides in 40 overs you didn't find many Aussies complaining they were undercooked.

It's just the way it is, he's 21, to ask him to play 13 tests in a year with his frame was always going to tough and very unlikely.

He needs to toughen up and a few hard days in the field in hot conditions against some high calibre players would have been much better preparation than 3.5 days against the Banglis under laden skies

His first 2 tests were abroad in Bangladesh and both went into a 5th day IIRC. Small experience but experience all the same.

A lot of the Ashes tests in 2005 didn't get into a 5th day because the pace of the game was so quick. English wickets just invariably produce results.

Again its a fair argument but i'm not sure what the alternatives would have been. The cricket calendar seems to be set years in advance these days and to be honest out of the lesser test nations the Banglis batting isn't too shabby.

I stand corrected but The Oval, Old Trafford & Edgbaston all went to the final day didnt they?

how has he done in Pakistan, Sri Lanka etc. havent actually checked

Don't think he's ever played a test in Pakistan, has only played 2 tests in total against SL and I'm not sure if they were home or away. Averages 24 against Bangladesh but again I think he's probably played 2 at most in Bangladesh.

has played two tests in Sri Lanka & 3 in India

Averages 126 in Sri Lanka

Just goes to show the consistency to which I have often referred is lacking

Yes but the 2 tests in question will have been at least 4 years ago if not longer, and SL is probably more a swing bowlers graveyard than India to be fair.

the whole of the sub continent is pretty unseamer friendly which goes to show how good someone like Vaas was to walk away from test cricket with a career average of 29.58.

Interestingly Vaas never really got in the top 5 of the world rankings on a regular basis due to the competition around in his era. As I have previosuly alluded to, the standard of test cricket and in particular the quality of bowler has vastly diminshed.

Its sad that someone like Anderson is ranked 3 in the world (from the perspective of wanting to watch high class performers), whereas in previous years, he wouldnt have got anywhere near the top 10.

But the world rankings is really just a form thing and if you look at Andersons form over the calender year then he deserves to be up there. I'd agree with your sentiments that the quality isn't what has been in the past, but he's proved he can do it in different conditions which is one of the things you always harped on about.

I dont believe he has proved this. We were lucky to scrape a 1-1 draw in SA and similarly if we lose the Ashes, he will have just proved that as a leader of the attack we are not capable of taking more than 20 wickets once on foreign soil against the test powerhouses.

In order to be the best, you have to beat the best in their own backyard

I dont recall you banging on about consistency with Harmison where you could make even bigger arguments about his performances at home and abroad. Only the absolute true world class performers of their day - Wasim and Waqar, the Ambroses and Walshes could you say were consistent on all surfaces in all conditions. Even the likes of McGrath and the West Indies quartet of the 70s struggled in the sub continent.

Jimmy is no more or less consistent that your normal decent opening test match bowler.
