I've met some truly mad Sunderland supporters .....

worked on railways with dinky big mates our first away trip together at 18 ish off train late from fulham i think ..mags waiting for any sland fans as usual at nuuuurcastle station we said feeck it as punches landed on us we ran off to parcel trolleys in corner n got them and steamed into mags their shins must still be black n blue 30 odd years later the amount of times we run them at mags ...we had no opption and it worked i tell you ...dinkys purpel moheeccccaaan hair cut stood out like a mag in jacksons pub ..great kid happy days traveling on trains with dinky .

Travelling to away games in recent years has been an absolute doddle in comparison to 70's and 80's days when transit's, furniture vans, jumping trains and coaches and hitching was all part of it. As many have already stated on this thread they hitched every week from Yorkshire, Midlands etc. Pleased to say I only ever had to do it the once when a number of us were throw off the Travel Club bus for smuggling cans back on and generally acting ourselves, think we were coming back from Stoke. Decided to split up into two's to make it easier to get back home to Sunderland. Me and the lad I was with had no money between us eventually made it to York with a couple of lifts and then jumped a train, my old man picked us up at NC and gave me a slap and hard time for weeks after. Told me I couldn't go to away games again and that lasted at least two weeks ha ha.

Credit due to all who have hitched up and down the country following the lads over the years.

That's story - word-for-word was re-enacted my another Washington lad (Mark E from Concord later Ch-le-Street) ordered snakebite f in a Portsmouth bar back in the early 90s - the Pompey guvnor advised Millwall or some such had trashed the place previously when drinking Snakies. This promoted Mark not only to ask the question re: Beefy crisps, but to order halves of cider and lager and swig a gobful of each and swish around in gob before swallowing.

He only done this for the one pint from memory but I'm wondering if he'd heard the tale from the game you mentioned as it would have been part of Washington/Concord folklaw - he might have even been there as a 21/22 year old at that time :lol:

Used to work with a bloke who knew the lad who climbed up the floodlight, nickname Duncan Disorderly mentioned his name to one of me dads mates a number of years ago.
He asked how I knew him, I told him the bloke I used to work with told me, he asked the name of the bloke I worked with, they all lived near each other at the time, small world.

Sadly the bloke I worked with had passed away about 18 months prior.

RIP Ronnie, season ticket holder for years at Roker.

Remember well the Seaburn van hire transits, but never a furniture removal van.

You cud guarantee that after setting off for an away match from sunlun that you'd see a tranny parked up on hard shoulder near ripon, Selby, wetherby, catterick etc with 14 lads having a slash in to an adjacent field. It was part of the scenery !!!

Certainly did, I posted about ours earlier in the thread, a good story about Pete Little.

We were once in a car park at Bristol Rovers, in the 1970's, and their hooligans were checking cars for Sunderland supporters to attack.

We waited til just the right moment and gave the 'everyone out' signal by flashing the interior load light.

There must have been 17 or 18 big lads jump out and fettle them ....
....... the lads in the car being attacked were giving us cans of lager and doing exaggerated 'brow mopping' gestures.

We let them leave the car park first 'cos we knew they'd be back with more mates and sure enough they were.

We'd have been in bother if it wasn't for the stash of bits & bobs we used to hide in the van.

And tbh all we ever wanted to do was follow SAFC, have a few laughs and enjoy the football ..... the rest was just how things were and we accepted it.

When we were lost usually in London, we'd see a white van with Seaburn Van Hire on the side and just say "There's the lads just follow that !"
No mobiles or sat navs then.
We would get up their backside and just follow them to which ever pub they went to.

No mate, a Luton van with a roller door and a 'sleeper cab' above the driver.

We used to put blown up tractor inner tubes in for seats, a pile of pallets for a card table and a power lead from the battery for music and light.

I always drove so I didn't give a shit about the animals in the cheap seats :lol:

Bristol Rovers away was always like Dodge City. You wouldn't have thought you would get chew down there but believe me you did. I went twice and got bother both times, in fact when I look back I can't understand why I went back after the first visit.
Eastville was a chewy trip. At least we could have a great night out on the way back at Worcester or Cheltenham .
Mind as far as I can remember they didn't come up here.
