There are no outstanding candidates.

Just like there are no outstanding candidates to fill the spinbowling void, the wicketkeeping area for concern (imho), the issues we have with the top order.

None of the current team look like they could captain the team through this transition.

We don't have a top notch attack, particularly in the lack of a quality spinner. So we need a captain who can see a plan, and then another plan quickly if needs be. We need a man who will take the ball off any of the bowlers if they are bowling rubbish. We need a man who can run the team, one who might even stand up to the endless interference with every fast bowler who comes into the squad. Plunket, Finn, Meaker to name but three, even Broard and Anderson have suffered from this and it has to stop.

Currently the whole England- Team England!- is a bit of a circus. Views of the dressing room balcony show all sorts of people floating in and out, some with no official connection to the team. It is ridiculous and is something Vaughan or any of the other top captains we have had would never have tolerated. Brearley used to say that the dressing room was sacrosanct, a place where players could be honest and harsh with one another without ill feeling. This is now impossible as any words said will find their way to the press. And words DO sometimes need to be said.

All of this needs sorting out, and although I agree that Root looks like a good future captain, to burden him with this job now would very likely drag him down .
I have never really liked the idea of fast bowlers being captains at test level. They should be either bowling, getting ready to bowl, or resting. Bell looks like a follower.

So. For me I'd go for Rob Key. Not in Cook's class as a batsman, but neither is Cook at the moment, so to speak. Key has nothing to lose, and I think it that is vital. He is a clever , inventive captain, independently minded and would be ideal at the moment IMO.

I expect though , that this selection committee will take the easy and obvious route. Cook to die by a thousand more cuts. This guy can bat. and he can bat in any conditions as he has shown in the past. But he has lost his game, and he won't get it back when he is labouring under an impossible burden.

Colly is the man to Captain England.
Bat at 7 and run the show. Root is obviously being groomed for the job but it's far to early for him.
Colly has the experience needed and will get players to play for him.
He's been a revelation since he took over the Captain's reigns at Durham. I know we don't want to lose him at Durham but he's the best candidate by a country mile.

The game has moved on mate.

Disagree. Short term solution in view of a lack of viable candidates. Maybe just for next 2 tests and winter. We dont have s greame smith option like SA did when they appointed him at 22

The ECB missed a trick not getting Collingwood on the coaching staff. Peter Moores is stale, outdated, tedious and boring, which pretty much fits the bill for The ECB clowns

There are no candidates from within the team. Saddling a young lad like Root with the job would be suicidal for him and the team. Broad is the only candidate, but our DRS reviews would be used up by 11:15am

There has to be a candidate from the county game? Even to see us through 18 months or so until someone like Root or Robson maybe are ready? f***ing hell we are in the shit
