Isidor / Haiti

They play their games in neutral grounds around the Caribbean, I believe.
This would make sense. I travelled across the country many years ago in the Babydoc era. Some seriously violent undercover government henchmen knocking around then. It would seem now their offspring run lawless gangs. Good luck Wison!

I've watched a few videos on it, what a mad and dangerous part of the world. I was surprised to learn it's next door to Dominican Republic which we thoroughly enjoyed when we went
Really- you went to Dominican Republic and weren’t aware it’s not only next door but part of the same island as Haiti or am I misunderstanding 🤔

I looked into the history of both countries when I was there. Basically the Dominican was under Spanish rule for years which allowed it to develop slowly and get a good, solid structure.

Hiati was under French rule but the local populace took control a good couple of hundred years ago paying the French yearly for their freedom. This skinted the country and they had various leaders, assassinations and all kinds of upheaval. Then they had the Doc and Baby Doc Duvalier years of dictatorship and massive corruption. The whole history is a mess and they have ended up as a lawless state.
Makes an argument for colonialism!
Maybe the old colonies should be paying us compensation.🙂

I remember there were really bad storms in Haiti in 2004 which killed over 1000 people. Brazil played Haiti in a friendly in Port-au-Prince as a fundraiser/raise moral of the locals and absolutely f***ing humiliated them 6-0. They had all the top boys playing and Haiti barely touched the ball for 90 mins.

I went nearly 20 years ago to the Dominican Republic and had a great time. Had no idea of Haiti and where it was until recently, why would I?

Not my first choice of destination. Talk about a failed state.

Sure it has something to to with the historical reparations they agreed to pay France for their independence? Basically nearly every cent was going to France rather than on schools, civilian infrastructure hospitals etc. Country never had a chance the reparations were arguably one of the most exploitative international agreements in modern history.

Always the West's fault.

They are the only English speaking country in South America so they have more in common with many of the ex British West Indies islands.

Belize is in central America. I think it has quite a small population, mostly rain forest. I have no idea if they play cricket?

Edit: the play to a very low level.

I went to a football match in Belize. Orange Walk Juventus v Real Espana of Honduras. Orange Walk's star striker was called Norman Nunez. The lass with me kept cracking up every time he was mentioned by the people around us. Turned out she thought he was called Norman Newness, which she thought was hilarious.

The excellent Real Dictators podcast on the BBC includes a – which is worth a listen – inc background to French colonial rule. Basically, violence is baked into the Haitian culture. Add in plenty of voodoo and it's a volatile mix.
It is an awesome series. The history of the Island is fascinating.

“Only slave revolution that lead to an independent state……..In the 18th century it is the richest place in the entire colonial world.”

Taken from the empire podcast. They do a few episodes on it from ep. 64 onwards.
