Isidor / Haiti

Me too. We learned a lot of proper inane shit, back in the day. It's just one of those things that we of a certain age probably know.

I could wax lyrical for hours on Ox Bow lakes and the Fluvial Sediment process.
I know all about ox bow lakes, never actually seen one though.

People are taught how to pass exams these days rather than getting a good grounding in general knowledge.

One I could do as well, but I accept it’s possibly not “common knowledge”.

All sorts of groups and people will know stuff, depending on age and where you’ve been on holiday etc

That doesn’t make it common knowledge

I'm with @woodlebert. Plenty of people have heard of the Crimean War but not many of them could name the countries involved nor would they have know the recent history of how it became part of Ukraine. How many countries of the West Indies aren't islands.
None really.

People from (British) Guyana play for the West Indies cricket team but it's part of South America.

And the Föhn effect, the gold standard and the life cycle of a frog.

You might have been confusing it with the small island country Dominica.
Not at all. Wanted to go to Dominican Republic in 2006 but all you get shown is a map of the Dominican Republic and where to go ie north South etc. Been to other parts of the Caribbean since but it was only when I watched videos of Haiti and it showed where it was I was like f***ing hell it's the other side of the island 😂

Surprised? 😂

The 2 countries share the island of Hispaniola, it's basic common knowledge.

I looked into travelling to Hiati on a trip when we went to the Dominican about 3 years ago. Soon backed out when I realised what a shit storm the country had become unfortunately.
It’s absolutely lawless.. my company sent teams in to rebuild the telecom infrastructure as part of an international aid package after the earthquake in 2021.. engineers were kidnapped, equipment stolen, huge bribes demanded for anything and everything. If I was Isidor, I’d stay well clear!

But it is common knowledge if every single person is (or certainly was) taught it in school.
That's like saying that Pythagoras' Theorem isn't common knowledge just because most people might have forgotten it.

Indeed.

Yes. We should probably define “common knowledge”.

I’d have thought its about knowledge, not being taught something.

I would expect somebody to be able to broadly explain or know something on the spot for it to be knowledge they have.

Common, I would say above 50%? So more people than not can do it.

We’re taught thousands of things at school, I don’t think they’re all common knowledge. It’s the stuff most people know or can define that is a) common and b) knowledge.

(Hence why I don’t think the location on a map and countries inhabiting Hispaniola would be common knowledge)

That's why I put British in brackets.

They play cricket because it is an ex British colony unlike anywhere else in South America.
Yes, but it identifies as Caribbean/West Indies and had observer status when the West Indies Federation existed. Does Belize play cricket? Is it on the continent of South America? Was it originally British Honduras? Yes, yes and yes. It's not common knowledge. Does it identify with The West Indies? Yes.

They are the only English speaking country in South America so they have more in common with many of the ex British West Indies islands.

Belize is in central America. I think it has quite a small population, mostly rain forest. I have no idea if they play cricket?

Edit: the play to a very low level.
