Is Boro a derby?

SAFC v Boro 70’s/80’s was a proper NE Derby and in decades before was classed as one.

Proper chaos down there, Sunderland used to totally overwhelm them but they’d show up, the Sunderland Echo used to advertise the train times on the Friday night before the match and everyone would meet up, largely on the earlier trains and as soon as you got off the train there’d be hell on down the shopping area, full scale battling in Marks and Spencer and nearby shops, all the way to Linthorpe Road etc..

Sunderland in the Holgate regularly. Full on. There was an Anglo Italian match circa 72 and a low crowd of circa 12,000-must have been 8,000 hoolies up for it!

FTB.

When I was born Boro was in North Yorkshire officially. I personally do think it's a Derby game. 30 miles away. I actually don't mind Boro. The Geordies I don't like. However to me it's a Derby. So is Hartlepool and Darlo if we played them
What's the thoughts?
Ohhhhhhrrr thank god for rum.

Nonsense - Sunderland has almost twice the population of Middlesbrough, and if you’re going into catchment areas Tyne and Wear 1.8m Teesside half a million

I'm talking actual town boundaries, yer actual Sunderland and Middlesbrough both about 175,000 if Boro gets its 40k back thats been given to Redcar for some reason. if we are talking total conurbations yes no comparison. Might also explain why your crowds are bigger, but you lot don't like to admit that do you.

Sorry but that is complete nonsense - Redcar is not part of Middlesbrough and never has been
No what I am saying (on the map you have shown,) Southbank, Eston and Normanby are in the boundary of Redcar, (people on Teesside call them (unofficial Middlesbrough) it’s joined to Middlesbrough..that’s all…probable population about 30k? It’s a contentious debate really mate, they divided the council boundaries in such a way, Redcar is another 5 miles away from the places named and not in Middlesbrough.

It's only a derby if you go to Saltburn and buy an ice cream then go to Boro with your red and white top on and get the shit kicked out of you...That's a derby!!
I think...???
🤣 it's a Derby when we beat them away only.

It's just such a poor argument from Boro fans.

They have nothing south until they reach Leeds.

We have Newcastle and Boro north and south of us.

Sandwiched between two clubs. They have nothing below them to steal support.

Here's one for the Boro lot. If I go down redcar high street on Sunday will it be packed with people supporting Boro in the pubs?

Of course it will but apparently that doesn't count as it makes Boro fans look bad 😂

If you look at your map you will notice one thing Grangetown, South Bank, Eston, Normanby etc are all attached to Middlesbrough not Redcar but have been put in Redcar and clevelan council area. That's around 40k people actually part of Middlesbrough that are not counted, add them back and you have around 180k people.

I don’t hate Boro.

It feels nowt like when we play the Mags. It lacks the intensity of our real Derby.

I want us to beat them, like everyone we play but it does not come with that horrible nervous feeling like when we play the Mags.

HTLs

90% of Boro’s support comes from within 8 miles of the stadium - go north of Billingham it’s Sunderland Newcastle territory, go south of Northallerton/Thirsk you’re into Leeds and the usual glory supporter teams like Utd City an Liverpool. Go west towards Darlo and it’s mostly Mags - Boro have to rely on a very localised fan base

Whenever we play the mags, I get nervous and anxious about a week before kick off....during the match, I get tense everytime they are in possession of the ball or in our penalty area...........the score will then determine my mood for the next week or so.....(I could go on and on)

I feel nothing of the sort with Boro. Just another game I want to win

Every club has to compete with the bigger clubs in the country. That's another poor argument.

Just face it you have shit fans 😂😂
