India 🇮🇳 v England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 4th test Ranchi

Lots of talk about the improvement onder the new regime, but in the series that matter....

Failed to win the home Ashes series, a 2-2 draw. Last home Ashes under Joe Root was also 2-2.

3-1 kicking in India, last away series in India under Joe Root was a four tests series which ended....... 3-1.

All a bit Spursy.
All on the back of winning 1 in 17 before they came in. Since they game in against the 3 best teams in the world and the 3 teams that have contested the WTC over the last 2 years:

Aus 2-2
India 2-3
NZ 5-1

Obviously there is the first team in history to whitewash Pakistan in Pakistan and a series win against SA.

All said and done its been pretty impressive.

Great post - and all said it could have been so much better but for really fine margins in some tests with both India and Australia, and some better weather in the ashes. Only need a 1% improvement and we’re there now, whereas under root we were lucky to win that 1 test in 17 tbh, it was that bad

Can't blame our rookie bowling attack but we're never going to progress with a hard luck lads platitude when 3 down in the series. India batters have simply shown more application and read the situation far better than ours. Bazball is exciting when it comes off,the downside is we can't,more likely won't,adapt when a situation requires a more conservative approach.

Do you think so? It's more about quality in the batting than reading the situation in this testy anyway. There was virtually no aggressive intent with the bat in this test and if there had of been i think we would have got more runs in the second innings rather than piss farting about. Stokes in trying to 'read the situation' just looked like a sitting duck to the spinners in both innings. By and large we tried to 'read the situation' but just weren't very good at it because our defensive technique isn't very good. The last time we came out here it was clear we were incapable of defending well and crease occupation against high quality spin and we still aren't good enough. It certainly wasn't bazball that lost us this test but it did win us the first.

I just hope it isn’t at the expense of Foakes. Bairstow out and Brook in for me.

Keeper situation going forwards is interesting. Bairstow is in dreadful form with the bat and wasn’t good enough with the gloves last summer. Foakes hasn’t really scored enough to cement his place and didn’t do well batting with the tail yesterday.

Wonder if they go with Robinson or Smith soon

Robinson gave a good account of himself batting with the lions tail.

Two 80 plus scores at 75+ SR off the top of my head. So definitely put his name into the conversation.

However England can fuck off picking Carse, Potts and him this season :lol:

Edit: bizarre scores from Ollie actually (I was right about the 80 and 75+ bit)

I'd be effing livid if they dropped Foakes mind. He is one of the reasons we have been so competitive this series with his wicket keeping.

I'd like to see some stats with chances created and chances taken. He's been exceptional behind the stumps. A great wicky is worth their weight in gold imo.

Saying that mind he should be marshalling the tail better. Hardly a dropable offense though.

Or maybe the young lad at Somerset.
He's more in the Foakes mold from a batting perspective.

Mind him and Bashir put on a swashbuckling 10th wicket century partnership.

Watched that after the hype around him as was interested to see if he could go up the gears and be more "bazball".

Rew's 221 innings being ended by James Vince of all people(when Hampshire had Abbott,Abbas,Barker and Dawson)

Foakes averages under 30, Buttler used to get slated regularly and averaged more.

His keeping is brilliant but outside the subcontinent im not sure you need a specialist keeper
He's definitely going to get dropped again. You can just see it.

Which is harsh seeing how he performed with the bat in 2022 home summer. Match winning partnership with root and not out century off the top of my head.

We've got a 3 match series away to Pakistan after 6 home tests against WI and Sri Lanka. Be somewhat ridiculous if he's back in for them 3 tests after missing the next 6.

Agree with what you're saying. But is our defensive technique poor as a result of focusing on attacking cricket, not solely due to Bazball but players in their formative years too much emphasis on T20?
Get Jennings back in at 3 and Brook in for Bairstow.

But for 2 days of rain we would have won The Ashes and were more than competitive in the two we lost.

Took a best innings ever from Stokes the previous one to get us close, where we were outplayed for the most of it

We were over the moon when Denly scrapped a 30 in that series, yet in this last Ashes we had Crawley in the fourth test absolutely take apart their quality attack and we were equal or the better team in that series.

This India series despite the scoreline we have been miles better and more competitive than the last one nobody can deny that.

I suspect you know that, so no idea what your motive is to go down the line you have and make that post.

And that’s before even looking at the nothing short of superb performance in Pakistan, that’s never been done before winning 3-0. The first test in that series to win the game on the flattest wicket you well ever see was simply awesome.

Anyone who can’t see the improvement in this test side by this regime is either blind or obtuse for the sake of it.

I suspect you the later.

Pope would score more runs at 3 than Jennings would in England this summer

Pope never really had series like Sri Lanka and WI at home yet to get some scores

Latter! Just think this series has shown there's need for some adaption to all out aggression

Yeah of course always room for improvement and reflection and in the first innings of this test match they did exactly that.

And that what cricket about adapt your approach to the situation and the odd time this team has been gulity of not doing that.

Bottom line for me is this side under this regime is unrecognizable from the side under the previous regime.

From where we were in the last West Indies series to where we are now as a test side is a cause for massive celebration.

So yes reflect, adapt and improve but any poster saying we haven’t improved by a considerable margin under this regime are talking totally out of their backside.

And if we used our brains we'd have won them ;)

You'll note I'm not quite as an emotional as I was last summer. I'm just gutted again for what might have been.
