Incinerator on edge of washington

It's going to have a chimney stack the size of durham house pumping out incinerated plastic waste. Rolton Kilbride are using technology that has never been used before in the UK to do it so no one knows the full extent of the shit that's going to be pumped into the air. Why should residents and children right next to it be the guinea pigs and breathe it in. On top of that it's all the pollution from the lorries to transport the waste to it every day.

Depends which way the wind is blowing, perhaps it can go in a Sunderland direction and we can breathe easily.

Disgrace they want to build it in a populated area......or build it at all

they should be dealing with waste in a more environmentally friendly means

shame on Mel speding for abstaining.

Waste is a big problem and we’ve never cracked it in the UK. The Scottish government very recently went back on a ban of biodegradable waste going to landfill as they realised it just wouldn’t work. We don’t have the infrastructure to recover the vast amount of waste we generate. We send shit loads of bailed waste abroad.

Incineration (or energy from waste) is essential at present, although I would say we’re well covered in the region in any case. We actually have an incinerator in Wilton which takes some of Merseyside’s household waste

Well that's fine then.

So what are the options? More landfill?

use less plastics in production, recycle more plastics like the biffa factory at seaham. The main purpose of the plant is to generate electricity....so Invest in more green energy (solar panels) wind power etc

Recycling plastic has problems in itself with both recyclable and non recyclable materials used together, for example bottles and bottle tops.
You can make things better for the recycling process by not chucking bottles out with tops left on them.

indeed it’s all better than “gasification” a euphemism for burning plastics. No doubt this plant would be burning waste from further afield than wearside? Yet the emissions from the plant would fall across the region
We are drowning in our own waste. Just look at roadsides, grass verges etc. Full of discarded plastic.

<<it’s undeniable. It’s everywhere. Another gift from an oil extraction bi-product, not only is it polluting the air, its polluting the seas and land for good measure
The sooner we run out of oil the better

Agreed. And we are ingesting it.

Frankly, the answer is very simple. The government need to create a not-for-profit recycling industry across the country. Most stuff can be recycled, its not cost effective compared to thowing it away and replacing it.

The right combination of providing the facilities to process this stuff, taxing the wrong type of materials in the production chain and taxing "dumping" stuff would be a huge step forward.

And create a fuckton of jobs. Hell, we could become industry leaders in something for once.

They do tax in the form of Landfill Tax.

We also need to steer people away from using single use plastics, encourage multiple use. For example buy a bottle and re-use for water from the tap.

Yup. Its already started
Next is to categorise the packaging that is used - and tax those that we simply don't want to have to process afterwards - things like black plastic which is not cost-effective to recycle.

Turn the tables.

We have been leaders in many a field for decades, if not centuries now.

As long as there are replacements in place that don't take us back in time.
Look around you now, take away plastic what would everything be made of instead?

Its the amount thats being consumed and not recycled. Only a fraction is recycled properly and ends up as useable plastics again. We need to recycle more and there'll be plenty.
People have been warning about plastics for a long time, and were dismissed as tree huggers or hippies.
So we're at a crossroad, do we continue to make stupid environmental choices and burn it, polluting the air and adding greenhouse gases, trying to fix another stupid environmental choice of production without an efficient recycle process?
Or do we try to fix things by investing more in green energy and recycle more?

We live in a capitalist society they’ll do whatever keeps them in the money.
