My point is they wasted a huge amount of cash on renting when they could have bought and cleared a fair bit of their mortgage in 20 years. Not really sure why its so hard to make sense of that.

I agree with what you’re saying about rental being a waste of money , but the implication you made of paying £800 a month for twenty years is frankly not feasible.

Not really sure why you used that figure, likewise can’t understand why you can’t make sense of what I’m saying.
