We almost always line up with 4 at the back. Hume Right side of midfield and we will move to a back 5 when needed during most games.
So when people say dropping into full back as part of a 5 they aren't meaning covering the full back. They mean he becomes the full back, and the fella playing full back steps across as a centre half.
To say every wide player does this is osnt true as not every team is playing with a right back in midfield and not every team transitions from a back 4 to a back 5 during games.
The reason it's happening is because he is a defender truth be told, but is being played further up the pitch as he can do a job across the positions/pitch rather than we don't have anyone else to play RM.
Over time, if the manager wants to focus more on attacking, and stops looking to be so solid, fluid and set up where we can comfortably move from 4 to 5 and back again then you might see a change in personnel. But at present it's a big part of why we are where we are and why Hume continues to get picked.
In simple terms, yes. With the manager confident in his ability to cover the right hand side and more centrally in a defensive sense, whilst still getting up the pitch too.
