It is like an ugly, overweight and acne effected 14 years old boy acknowledging and bemoaning his ugliness in front of the mirror, only to be told by his doting mother - "Well I think you are very handsome, Timothy".

In truth, the mother's subjective opinion is irrelevant - the boy is still objectively ugly, fat and spotty. Similarly, the Chronicle's attempt to put a positive spin on Championship football is flattery, but everyone knows that it is not as good as the Premier League and that Newcastle will be playing in it.
