Great aircraft carrier - pity that we haven't actually got the aircraft to fly off it.

They're not due to embark any fixed wing aircraft on to it until 2018 anyways. I think Merlin Helicopters are due to be embarked in 2-3 weeks time for its initial sea trials. The round the world tour would be canny that she'll eventually do.

New Carrier. Why the change from Ark Royal to Queen Elizabeth though? anyone know?

If you're talking about the name they've never followed on with the same ship name from one class of carrier to the next before. There was gonna be a QE Class of aircraft carrier in the sixties but it was cancelled as part of the 1966 defence review.

This is only the fourth aircraft carrier that's been laid down and completed for the RN in over 70 years like.

Spent 5 years on that and the Prince of Wales at Hebburn as a project assistant, proper interesting job, took it for granted a bit, didn't quite understand the enormity of the engineering behind it at the time. Been up to Rosyth a few times at various stages to see it assembled.

Bit of a white elephant and hugely over budget, but a fantastic bit of navel engineering
