Still gobbly gook to me. He needs to comment on his comment. Imagine Paulo and Gus having a conversation.

I'm aware of their job titles. If you think there's clear blue water between their functions, then you must've come down in the last shower lad.

You don't have to be a f***ing clairvoyant to work out he's not exactly chuffed with the structure. But then, why did he join in that case? We had a DoF this time last year, he was obviously amenable to giving up at least some power to sign players.

Anyway, it's irrelevant - even if he is chippy about it, sort it out behind closed doors. The fucker must be an absolute nightmare employee.
There is clear blue water. That's why the owner elected for that management model. It's not really that difficult. :)

I am not a Gus fan and do think he is willing to take praise, but when the going gets tough he is more than happy to have a scapegoat. But Having listened to the interview I do not think he is saying these players are nothing to do with him - which would obviously not be true when you look at the Buckley & Bridcutt signings.

Possibly his comments relate to the (lack of) depth of the squad meaning he has had to play wes who is not 100 percent & Vergini who is jet lagged. He might feel that his hands have been tied with team selection as he has not been given a full squad so can not taking full responsibility for his team conceding 8 as it might have been different if he had some back up?

Whatever he meant, it is possibly not advisable to be so open with his views - he needs a lesson in discretion!

So what you're saying is that Poyet had no input into the signing of Buckley and Bridcutt?
You're conflating two notions. It may be that some players identified by the Coach may have been recruited by the DOF. We can speculate as to why this may be the case. :) Other players identified by the Coach may not have been recruited. Again we can speculate as to why.

However, the two roles are distinct and separate and this is something the Coach has spoken about about in the past. For better or worse, this is the management model, that the coach commented upon this afternoon.

No he commented on his responsibility, which he implied was putting the team on the pitch that was bought and the other responsibility lay elsewhere. If he has input on the players recruited, which obviously he does, then he shares, to one extent or another, responsibility for the players that were actually recruited.

To use your own terms, it's fairly simple.

Indeed. The responsibility for recruitment & retention lies elsewhere, not with the coach.

He wasn't exactly cornered into saying what he said.
Wouldn't fancy him watching my back.
Highly unprofessional, don't think I've heard the like before.

Poyet is employed as a coach, he knew the remit when he took the job.

You don't know what his remit was really. None of us do.

You'd think the manager has the ultimate say who the club signs, particularly in our position. It's not like we're going out signing world class players that a manager would love to have at their disposal.

Just wanted to make sure, before asking @Nelson! if he has an opinion on it now that it's shown that the op is not lying and our fans are not "choosing to believe the worst".

I think it's an appalling comment to make personally. He's either in this with us or he can fuck off. How can he expect the players to be professional and take responsibility on the pitch when he can't do it himself off the pitch?

My personal opinion is that it's nothing new at all. He was telling us in no uncertain terms all summer that he wasn't happy with the recruitment. He told us numerous times that we were going to be left short.

Why should he be the only one taking criticism when a squad he told us all plainly wasn't big enough or good enough gets a battering?

The DofF stuff is just a good way for Short to make sure the spending is controlled by someone whose job security is based (at least partly) on how the books look rather than how the team performs.
