Going teetotal

Has anyone on here done it? I do love a drink, I used to be a bit of a party animal but it all takes its toll dunnit?
I think at some point I'm gonna knock it on the head.
I fall in the same camp, in that I used to be a bit of a party animal. Albeit with drugs in the mix as well. It does take its toll on you; physically, mentally and emotionally, though.

I can easily go months without a drink now and then have a few sociable ones when the fancy takes. I have found that it helps going to the gym regularly and getting out for walks.

Good luck, marra đź‘Ť

I knocked it on the head completely from November 2022 to October 2023. At first it’s a buzz but it becomes where people stop asking you to go out and so on. Xmas time and all the arranged meet ups and nights out make it unsustainable for our age group.
I’m a changed man through that spell off it though and totally lost the taste for it. I’ll have a couple on a Friday night now or if out with mates and to me that’s the way to go. Before I’d be drinking say 6 pints on a Friday and possibly into double figures on the Saturday. I enjoyed every minute of it aswell, great times.

It’s not sustainable or sensible for ex drinkers to totally pack in, unless they have a problem. Drinking just a couple of on a weekend is enjoyable and no harm done. Once your getting into 5-6 pints then that’s when it gets ya
The wife reckons 6 pints is my limit

I'm not giving up just yet, got a very busy few weeks ahead :p

I knocked “nights out” on the head years ago, mainly because I hate hangovers. But I still enjoy going out for a few pints or having a lager with a meal. Doubt I’ll ever fully quit.

Big drinker down to a few on weekend here, I got into cycling and then running which helped a lot. One of my closest/only friends got me into this fitness/sport lark and I thank her almost every time we get together, 88kg going no where in life, drinking and smoking 6 nights a week, now down to 73kg and pretty fit for my age, saves you a wedge, more alert, better at my job, list goes on.

Going total tee-total sounds like a step to far but cutting back in terms of frequency and amount can only be a good thing. I would hate never be able to experience some of the wonderful tastes of beers, wines and spirits from around the world and the occasional and moderate alcohol session can have some benefits.

However, if your drinking pattern is 10 pints of Fosters and then some Jager shots then no good can come from it.

Even I couldn’t stomach that 💩💩💩💩

I do love a drink and I love socialising (obviously the nightclubs and raving are a distant memory these days) but I know it's no good for me and I do drink more than I should. I do actually like the taste of beer so I could easily swerve over to the non alcoholic stuff I reckon.

I've been a heavy drinker over the past 7 or 8 years and a lot of the time its had me both mentally and physically fucked, I blame a lot of it on what was my 7 days a week drinking.

I've had a massive cut down the last 12 months or so but still drink quite regular, however I went from drinking 7 nights a week in the house to only drinking 3 or 4 nights a week (its still more than id like but its better than how I was) and thats down to drinking alcohol free beer, if it wasn't for that I'd probably still drink 7 nights as I like the taste of it. A lot of people just don't get it though, always hear the "well why not just drink pop?" Well because I like the taste of beer/lager more than fanta and lemonade. This is usually only said by the weekend drinkers who go out Friday and Saturday nights and get as pissed as they possibly can.

When I go out now I always try and limit myself to 4 pints and thats it, occasionally will have a bottle or two after that if staying out longer but rarely bother now. I also prefer solo drinking now for that reason as well as easier to get carried away when with others.

I did manage 3 months without a drink at the start of last year but that was due to being on medication and I didnt really feel any better for it, but again that was probably down to the medication. A big issue for me is I've constantly got chest pain every day and the only thing that seems to get rid of it is a couple of pints, but I don't think that's a good solution in the long run and just feels like a continuous circle.

My mates all like a drink so giving up completely would likely isolate me a bit. I had to a couple of times due to apparent enzyme problems with my liver for about 4 months at a time. It was a bit shit.
I rarely go daft these days and don’t drink during the week as a rule but do like match days.

Doesn't sound like there's any urgency for you.
Depends on what your primary objective is.
Health
Weight loss
Financial benefit
Fear of dependancy.
Moderation is probably the best i'd manage. I notice there's a few mentions of hangovers. I realise there are degrees of hangover, but the worst i suffer is an occasional
slight headache. But mostly none.
Slight difference if your younger. I'm in my 70s and now have the attitude that something is going to get me sooner or later, and i seriously doubt it will be Alcohol related. So, problem free, i'll pootle on as usual.

Edit. I'd see more need for Sugar or red meat reduction.

I drink red wine with an evening meal, but I don’t drink alcohol much on its own or for its own sake. For me it’s one of life’s great pleasures.

I tried going dry and found it a bit dull to be honest. The wine I drink is what you would call food friendly (12.5 or 13%) rather than overpowering (14 or 15%).

Whatever works for you, it needs to be achievable and you need a bit of motivation to get into a new routine. Good luck.

Yes. Did it for 3 year. Me and the missus. Now we just drink on special occasions (not always). Or on holiday and it’s minimal. The first month is the worst explaining to people and changing the routine but after that it was quite refreshing. Drink has its place though.
