Getting bit anxious over defense. Haway Florent

All the doom mongers line up.
The club have already gone way above expectations this transfer window, they will have players lined up that may take longer than others, mind that won't stop the moaners, they want the signings now!

How long is it since Xhaka signed?
Ffs....
They’ve got to have something to get their panties twisted about, it’s the usual twisty *****

Looks like we can now rule out anyone arriving in time to take part in our pre-season.

We move on to hoping to have someone in in time for West Ham who is up to speed and ready to drop straight into the team.

Alternatively, Sunday will tell us who out of Seelt, Jones or Huggins is set to start the first game.

Big ask mate. Ballard and Selt it is.

This. If you can't score goals, you can't win games.

Goals have been hard to come by for us in pre season when the pressure's off.
Everton finished 13th last season, 23 points ahead of 18th place. They scored 42 goals in 38 games and their top scorer was Beto, with 8 goals.

Do you know what? I reckon (and this is just a guess) that as soon as we sign a CB the OP will find something else to make his duds look like Waterworld.

And how many goals did 12th and 14th score? How about the relegated sides? Were Everton an anomaly? Regardless, my point still stands, if you can't score you don't win games, we've struggled for goals pre season. I'm unsure how it will change dramatically against better opposition unless we bring in a better striker.

I might be wide of the mark here but I think clubs will see how desperate we are for a CB and a bit of haggling over the price might be what’s going on.

There's also the potential that defenders are hesitant to come to a team they perceive as a big relegation risk where they'll be under a lot of pressure, look exposed and may suffer reputationally. Hopefully our other signings will lessen that perception but it's still valid to feel that way.

I think it's more the case that we're targeting more experienced players for CB and for them simply coming to the premier league isn't the same opportunity as it is for emerging players like Talbi etc.

There's also more competition, they're more expensive and have more alternatives.

The desperation point, there's nothing we can do about that now and if it's a thing it has only become one more recently - it wouldn't have been an issue 6 weeks ago and we were presumably trying to sign CBs then too since it's been the obvious week spot all summer.

Pre-season man, honestly. Do people not learn year after year that pre-season is not a good indicator of anything. Last year we lost at Gateshead and Bradford, and were unimpressive against lower quality opposition than we've faced this year.

We then started the season and were top of the league for nearly 4 months.

We'll see. I'll be pleasantly surprised if we're scoring freely in the Premier League considering our current available options.

All the available evidence suggests that we'll be predominantly playing a narrow, low block when out of possession and looking to counter with pace. This being the case, what qualities are missing that are critical to this strategy amongst the currently available / potentially available defenders? To save us all the time and effort, it would be handy if people could show their working to make it easy for the dullards like me to understand.
