Genuinely scary horror movies

I read Susan Hill's 'Woman In Black' and the 'book' was proper nicely scary. The 1989 tv movie of the film (not the Harry Potter one) did it justice and although not as scary as the book was nevertheless very nicely scary indeed. My nana told me a scary book soothes a troubled mind. Wise words.

Thought the film was poor. I saw the stage play in that London and there were a few scenes that had me jumping in my seat.

The trouble with being a sceptic/atheist is that supernatural horrors just aren't scary because all the time you're watching it you're thinking "well this is just bollocks, ghosts don't exist".

Just been watching The Conjuring with the missus (even with the lights turned off to try to increase the spookiness) and the whole time the pair of us were just completely unmoved by it.

Can you recommend something that is actually scary?

Personally, Jurassic Park scared the crap out of me because it was something that could actually happen. (Science bitch!)

Not into torture porn like Saw and that sort of bollocks.

Not bothered about cheap shocks with loud noses and things jumping out at you unexpectedly.

Looking for something that creeps you out or makes you actually scared.

Answers?

A film called "February"

Aka. The blackcoats daughter

I remember the tv version, me and my mate shat ourselves at one bit

I dont believe stuff is real but when i watched the exorcist as a teeanger it scared the crap out of me. Same for paranormal activity 1/2 in my twenties.
Love films that find vulnerabilities and prey on them such PA. Cant stand films such as saw and the like.

"Torture porn" I've seen it referred to. I hate it like, don't like anything over the top gore wise like Hostel, Saw, etc.

The Shining, However its probably more about mental illness..
Its about 'shining'.

The Beyond
Dawn of the Dead (original and reboot)
(Terror at the) Opera
Insidious (surprisingly creepy)

Honourable mentions:
Brawl in Cellblock 99
Bone Tomahawk

A John Carpenter film that often gets overlooked is Prince Of Darkness. I watched this as a teenager and found it really creepy. It probably looks a bit dated now but it has a really good story. Donald Pleasence is in the film and he was always a great addition to any horror film.

The shining was the mental telepathy between the bairn and the old fella, which was a side story in my opinion to the real story was how the Jack Nicholson character went off his rocka..
It's a great film, genuinely scary in places but I really found the book to be much, much scarier than the film. Same with Pet Semetry - probably the scariest book I've ever read, in my opinion.

Jack Torrance also had The Shining, man. Read it again.

I've never read the book, I've only seen the film, I might give it a read over the summer hols now..
