Genuinely scary horror movies

I do get annoyed with the amount of films that are made from the perspective of a person carrying a camcorder to make it seem more 'believable'. But there's been a few that are quite good. Blair Witch, as mentioned above and perhaps the first Paranormal Activity movie. I saw a film the other night called Alien Abduction and it was really very good. A kid carrying a camcorder filming his whole family being abducted by aliens, one by one. It was very well done and worth a watch. It's free on Amazon, I think. And depending on your take on horror movie subjects, you might find the alien abduction thing more believable than ghosts and demons.

I've never read the book, I've only seen the film, I might give it a read over the summer hols now..
I think The Shining has been remade in recent times and is much closer to the book. But it doesn't have Jack Nicholson in it, unfortunately. I have seen it but it didn't make as much impression as the original film or the book.

Jack Torrance also had The Shining, man. Read it again.
That's what I got from the book - he had it more than his son and that's what sent him mad.

We're going to give Hereditary a go, as all the rest of the suggestions are either things we've seen, things we're not bothered about, or things we're thinking about reporting to the police.

I still quite like the possession angle of horror movies.

Even though it’s categorically not demons, the idea that mental illness and religion can make people go on like that is quite interesting.

I dont believe stuff is real but when i watched the exorcist as a teeanger it scared the crap out of me.

That French and Saunders skit ruined that film. Me and our lass went to the pictures to watch a re-screening of it a few years ago and when the lasses’ head started spinning everyone burst out laughing.

I'm not against this type of movie or TV show if it's enjoyable to watch, but as far as feeling creeped out or scared by it, it just doesn't happen for me with this type of thing.

But like you mention about mental illness and religion, I once listened to an audio recording on YouTube of the actual real-life exorcism that was the inspiration for the movie The Exorcism Of Emily Rose. It was being pitched as evidence she was actually possessed but to me it just sounded like a very disturbed girl in a lot of pain and mental anguish, suffering from some form of mental illness and possibly also a painful condition like Cluster Headache, essentially being tortured by a priest.

Absolutely f***ing horrendous to listen to, and just made me hate religion even more than I already did.

Blair Witch Project (the original)

I loved the Family Guy scene where Brian is a "seeing eye" dog for a blind person who goes to see that movie, and he's sitting in the cinema explaining what's going on.

"Nothing's happening, nothing's happening, nothing's happening, it's over, a lot of people in the theatre look pissed."

Not true though is it? If you had complete manipulation over DNA you could create a dinosaur from scratch. How could you create a ghost?
Tell me more about this complete manipulation, sounds amazing

The whole mosquito in amber crack is ridiculous. DNA crumbles to nothing after a few million years

The only way to make a Dino is by messing with chicken embryos or time travel

DNA has a 521-year half-life

The trouble with being a sceptic/atheist is that supernatural horrors just aren't scary because all the time you're watching it you're thinking "well this is just bollocks, ghosts don't exist".

Just been watching The Conjuring with the missus (even with the lights turned off to try to increase the spookiness) and the whole time the pair of us were just completely unmoved by it.

Can you recommend something that is actually scary?

Personally, Jurassic Park scared the crap out of me because it was something that could actually happen. (Science bitch!)

Not into torture porn like Saw and that sort of bollocks.

Not bothered about cheap shocks with loud noses and things jumping out at you unexpectedly.

Looking for something that creeps you out or makes you actually scared.

Answers?
This is a great point, if you're not willing to immerse yourself then there is no point really. And I think a person's imagination and creativity also assists the experience - not just with horror either.

Poltergeist scared the shite out of me, when I was a bairn.
How was that only a PG certificate
