This has actually wound us up to be honest if true. The caveat being if true of course.
It’s all fair playing nicey nicey when we’re in the championship and need to attract players who want to kick on. But as a PL team, with aspirations to be a top ten regular, why would we not stand in the way of a team only a few points above us taking a very valuable player a few days before the window shuts, just because they need some strength in depth.
Of course Liverpool are bigger than us and the player will want the move. But you don’t see Brighton or Brentford just lying down and “not standing in players way”. They’d have Liverpools eyes out if there’s an optional fee they’d buy him and sell him to Liverpool themselves for a profit.
If there isn’t an optional fee, why not just keep him till the end of the season. May as well use the asset we have.
By the sounds of it, we’re now forced to find a replacement a few days before the window shuts (a window that everyone is saying there’s a struggle to do deals at a reasonable price). Or we’re left short in a couple of positions.
