He’s the best player we’d have on the bench in a fully fit squad.
It’s about depth not just first 11. He’s better than Hume IMO.

Perhaps not, but my issue is the lack of rotation. Regis doesn't rotate enough, he sticks with the same team until he's forced into changing it. This isn't good for fitness, this isn't good for squad morale, and leaves squad players rusty for when they have to be called upon.

Xhaka is injured for the first time in years for a reason, he's played every minute, including cup.

Gerty should have started more in a rotation.
 
I get why he would want to to go there but he is leaving one beach for another so a bit pointless really. Hope we don’t leave ourselves too short when the window closes

By that logic, why would a defender sign? Which position would a defender come into and play straight away?

Absolutely but that’s not starting regularly and he’s good enough to either be doing that somewhere else or fulfill the same role somewhere like Liverpool. I doubt he’d be thinking differently about this opportunity even if he’d played more.

But so does over at the back ....
Geertruida offered coverage of both .... but finding another like him looks a stretch hence 2 players... but even that looks at stretch. The Geertruida situation feels like it may pre date west ham ...if it does just how far back have we known of the risks

Geertruida covers 3 positions (RB, CB and CM). It's pretty much a certainty that the incoming isn't going to be able to do that to the level that he can.

Reports of "the club recognise the opportunity and won't stand in his way" indicate we're more far more concerned about not upsetting anyone than we should be.

If it was solely about not screwing ourselves, we'd have to told Liverpool and Leipzig that he's our player until the summer and to take a hike.

fair point on these two games. But I'm sure that the club will still be happy to give a firm "no" if they can't get what they think they need. I will wait until the dust has settled before I get too upset about how the situation has been handled.
