Gigs for the bunker, I didn't realise they put gigs on.
Aye, think it’s every Saturday at the Bunker

I was looking forward to it but I didn’t think it worked. The vocals and lyrics were lost in the whole sound. I enjoyed the night but the music deserves a better production. I’m not normally too bothered either but the songs are so good it was a disappointing performance.
They were much better the last time I saw them at the boiler shop. The sound was better and they put the vocals higher in the mix so she came through loud and clear. The backing was excellent last night but I agree that the vocals got lost in the music and were very smudgy.

Good venue, they even had Looper on, but it was far too full and there were arguments going on all around me as people could barely move let alone get out of people’s way as they were going to the bar.

I think the bookings are too good for the venue size honestly

I’ll give them another chance. I love her lyrics.

Think that might be General Public rather than The Beat? The Beat split in 1983 then Roger and Wakeling worked together in General Public for a few years. They were quite big in the US though never really as popular here

I've seen both versions of The Beat down the years (inc the one with Roger before he sadly died). Never read about him and Wakeling actually falling out though seems like the two versions were going at the same time so mustn't have wanted to be in the same one for some reason. They did a one off gig together at the RA Hall in 2003 as The Beat, which featured most of the original line up, minus Andy Cox and Dave Steele. Then in 2006, Roger started his version of the band, with original drummer Everett Morton and keyboard player Micky Billingham (Blockhead). Wakeling's band started a few years later and used the name English Beat, which is what they were billed as in the States during the early 80s, to avoid confusion with a US band of the same name. Wakeling had relocated to California by then and his band was mostly made up of musicians from the ska scene there, with no other original Beat members.
Yeah, they’ve always been The English Beat here, right from back when they were popular - I’ve seen copies of Just Can’t Stop It branded as that, and I had to show my wife my copy to convince her that it wasn’t their “real” name. They play a couple of General Public songs in the set.

Got quite a few in this month.

The Leisure Society @ The Cluny 19th April
SLUG ! @ Sea Change 21st April
Giant Sand @ The Cluny 22nd April
Adrienne Lenker (Big Thief) @ The Factory Manchester 25th April

Its a shame that there isnt much happening in town in terms of gigs with smaller indie acts . Pop Recs had quite a bit on last year but has been very quiet for gigs this year so far.
Do you know if they'll be emailing the Slug tickets out? Or is it just a case of name will be on door?

I would think just names on the door. Can't imagine they have any gear to scan tickets. Do you know if it's just Ian or the whole band?

Just booked for Sid Griffin & Peter Case at the Laundrette in Durham - seems a bit tiny for them but all the better, I guess - and Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit at the rather larger Globe in Stockton.

Oh, and King Creosote at the FS.

As pointed out by ged yesterday, they really missed a trick not booking dry cleaning when they came up here recently!

Just booked field music with the naswut brass band playing the firestation soon, courtesy of @mosi

nice respectively sunday afternoon leading up to the quiz in the evening.

Cheers. I dont know for sure but was expecting him to play with a band. Saw Field Music in there and it was loud in such a small space.

I head that it was full a band gig, theyre really good I've seen them a couple of times.

Does the keyboard player still dance about like a nutter?
He was an absolute radge - his keyboards/samples weren't working properly some of the time, and he was screaming/cursing at the sound desk during and between songs, giving them the finger, and at one point got off the stage and came through the crowd to yell at them close up. Looked like he was ready to start throwing haymakers.
