Finishing 6th

Unlikely we will finish that high.

We have some tough games coming up, and crap though Spurs were, we won by a single goal that had a huge deflection, only mustering 2 shots on target.

We have been far far better than anyone expected. Right from Palace away in our 4th game, it was clear did not look out of place in the Prem. Man City away is perhaps the only time we have looked outclassed. But we need an excellent run of results to get 6th, and I can not see that coming unfortunately.
Look at what else was viewed as unlikely.

- not being dead last at any point during the season
- taking 6 points off House of Saud First 11.

Its been a weird and wonderful season.

RLB and his team of golden testicled wonder boys have been a revelation. We know how to win and we never give up

CL may be a a bit of a stretch of the imagination for none '24 carat plummed' folk but I bet the lads don't think like that. They'll be taking each game as it comes and going for the 3 points

FWIW, I'd be fine if we didn't qualify for Europe as it would be such a huge distraction along with the dreaded second season syndrome.

Having followed Sunderland for 50 yor I'd expect relegation along with some bizarre Ashurst related cosmic event

why is that? Whats the difference between finishing 4th or 5th if both CL places in their own right?
FWIW I think we will finish 4th and lose in the semis so it wouldn't matter anyway.

But your point is valid. If England has earned an extra place due to the success of our competing teams, why would being even MORE successful and actually winning the trophy, cost us (England) that extra place if we finish top 4.

I stopped understanding football a long time ago though so what I think means sod all.

Basically, if we finish exactly 5th and win the EL, then 6th gets a CL place. If we finish top 4 and win the EL then 5th is the final CL place. It's only if we finish 5th and win the Europa that an extra place is given.

But might I add, we are nowhere near winning anything as it stands.
Yer far too sensible to be a visitor on here marra. Most are deranged braggarts with summet gone wrong in their psyche somewhere…….and the mags are even worse.

If arsenal and villa finish in the top 5 and both win their respective European tournaments they’re in then I’m sure the champions league qualification goes down to 7th,I’m maybe wrong on that mind but think that’s how it works

no, it would need Arsenal and Villa to finish outside the top 4. Arsenal cant so just Villa hence can only go down to 6th. Unlikely but a chance

that would be fantastic mind if we could grab 6th spot on the final day , cant see it happening but never know i guess
especially if the mags failed to get into europe

But if you’ve been following Sunderland for 50 years, you’ve probably never seen us play in a European competition. Why would we want to concede what would be the most advanced position for the club that the vast majority of supporters who attend a match have ever seen?

The excuse of future chances doesn’t really wash because we’ve had very few chances for 53 years.

Don’t believe in this ‘it’s too early’ bollocks that gets churned out by fans! If it’s on then we go for it!! Push boundaries as far as possible! European football is a very real possibility for us and I want us to get it!

I explained my reasons in the penultimate and final paragraphs

How many dreaded the prospect of PL football ? A similar number who clamour for European football ?

Crazy to think, if we win on Sunday and results go our way, we would be 6th 😳

Won’t happen, but still…

What an incredible season this has been, no matter what happens from now.

From smashing a 40 point target to stay up, to focusing in on a place in Europe....what a season it's been!

Just to be in the conversation about a European spot itself is huge reward for the players, staff, and the board for their hard work.

Laser focus for these remaining games, and see where it takes us. Milan maybe? 😆

Yeah and then there was that lucky goal against Newcastle, then that lucky refereeing decision against leeds, and really Mayenda was offside against bournemouth, and if you think about it burnley arent even that good anyway so the 3 goals dont count, and palace were distracted by europe, so really we’re just f***ing shite relegate us, why even bother?
That is a bit of an extreme reaction to me saying we were not really that great against Spurs, who were shit.

But well done on winning the melodramatic award for yesterday.
