If it was a vibration, they usually mention it over the radio. Which they didn't.
At no point in the "box box" message, did they say anything that makes you think the tyres wouldn't have lasted.

Mercedes have lost a bit of their aggressive edge with this obsession with no non-finishes for the championship. Toto has been trotting it out for weeks now. Left them chasing the game again in the drivers' but still well ahead in the constructors', so there's a conflict there...

They were find for 48 laps. Ocons' were fine for 58 laps
No reason at this stage to suspect Lewis' wouldn't have lasted. Also, Lewis said the same many times, and the radio message "they were going to fail" never came back from the pits.
If that was the case, they'd have told him to calm him down.

Win as a team, lose as a team surely. Makes the "well done guys, thanks so much for your effort" sound pretty false when the dummy gets spat.
Pirelli were saying it was dangerous.
Mercedes have no interest in mixing motorsport with danger, after what happened at Le Mans all those years ago, they’re quite sensitive to that sort of risk.

Why didn’t they tell Lewis that instead of saying they were going to lose the place then?
Because it wouldn’t have fit into a short radio message and it affects the other teams strategies?
They sounded like rabbits caught in the headlights.
They also have to be sensitive of a German car company telling the most successful driver of all time, who is black, what to do.
It was a bit of a car crash strategy wise, they got a decent finish all things considered.
