England v India (Third Test) Headingley

guys, is there any need for this stuff? I’m just debating cricket sensibly

people just look for fights with me sometimes for no reason! I’d like other people’s perspectives on this post!
I’ve had disagreements with you on cricket thread and agreed on other stuff just how it should be have an opinion and move on

You know that bollix is coming, as are the wickets. Just bat sensibly and grind them down.

Therell
Craig Overton is a good cricketer

mint slip catcher too

I want him in the side

Between Woakes, Overton and Robinson (and Wood when abroad) there’s enough to cope with the loss of Broad if he decides to go imo. Particularly as all three can hold a bat to a degree, which negates the need for Curran.

I don't think there was a conscious effort to crack on with the scoring today. Buttler, Bairstow and Ali play like that regardless and the game situation didn't change that imo.

yeah I agree

England’s tail has been an issue for a while now

2 handy cricketers Robinson and Overton

they can bowl all day too, shame they weren’t just a few mph quicker
His overall away record is poor but it’s improved in recent series and he deserves a chance to resurrect if imo.

I just can’t see it, I’m a huge fan I’d just play him in England

I also think he’d just get bounced out in Oz too with the bat

aye true

5 down would have been brutal for India tomorrow.

that’s the disappointment for me.

in England? He’s my number 8

Woakes not played for a year hard to include him
Woakes plays in England like if he’s fit. Averages 22 with the ball and 35 with the bat which are impressive numbers

So
My thoughts on the day

the day was ours
Hameed didn’t look comfortable at all and I think he was always going to go but good to have openers score

root well he’s just root brilliant

very disappointed in jos and Ali

bairstow could have got higher but he played to his game and tried to knock the run rate up give this lads the gloves for me at the moment jos head isn’t in it at the moment I think on his recent form

Overall the first two days are England’s 345 lead is huge india can’t afford to lose quick wickets have to try grind it out which will make good watching.

they need a 500 plus runs and as said earlier that would be one huge achievement in world cricket for any team

Well done lads

I’m assuming you are playing Anderson, broad and one of wood/archer assuming everyone’s fit. And a spinner and stokes. So where does Overton fit in?

yeah agreed

just not seen him for a year I don’t even know what his situation is

not sure I’d play wood outside of London.

for Curran at the minute.

I’ll admit I forgot about woakes he plays ahead of him but I don’t want an attack of broad, Jimmy and woakes

Fantastic two days for England. I think the questions around numbers 1-3 have been answered for the short term at least.Whilst I wouldn’t say Hameed and Malan played with complete assurance, they looked more composed and natural than those previously occupying the spots. Root is just magnificent. Playing a different game to most of the rest of the world let alone this side.

Whilst it has been fantastic, some of the frailties and question marks over some players remain. If Bairstow and Butter have all this natural ability that isn’t quite perfect for more challenging circumstances and they still struggle to really put their foot on the throat of the opposition, what is their batting circumstances?

Ultimately, there is so little depth in test match quality waiting in the wings so it’s very difficult to simply say drop them. Though in Buttler’s case with everything he has said about his availability in the fairly immediate future, I think it’s a little easier to make that call.

Wood is better away from home

Love the way Malan drives the ball.
He's always been very easy on the eye, technically.

I have thought for a while he should be number three and his T20 journey reveals something fairly remarkable about his character that would allow him to come back better. Hope today is first of many good knocks and think it will be.

Still nervous about Hameed but he has looked brilliant this test. The scorecard looks fantastic and if you replace Stokes for Curran, its actually a team that I could see competing ok-ish in Australia.

Obviously big if like, because his health should take precedent and I'm of the view that they should can the Ashes on the grounds that its asking too much of the players (and would-be fans), with Australia's Covid conditions.

I think Malan is a big tick, he looked in no trouble, albeit he was batting in favourable circumstances, and never looked like getting out

Hameed played well but need to see more of him

If Stokes comes back then there may be an argument for dropping Jos and even giving Bairstow the gloves again (I realise this is not imminent)

Given that he's going to miss the rest of the series and is talking about missing the Ashes I really wouldn't be surprised if Buttler decides to become a one day specialist soon.
