England v India (Third Test) Headingley

Cook developed into one of the greatest openers. And wasn’t near the most naturally talented, so did a lot through hard work and determination. No reason Sibley couldn’t follow a similar path and become a decent opener for us (we don’t exactly have high competition atm)

Cook was very obviously a world class opener pretty much from his debut onwards. He had dips in form here and there, as all do, but I don’t think his career average ever dropped below 42. He was comfortable against spin and seam, with enough shots in his arsenal to score off both. Sibley has one scoring option against seam bowling and pretty much none against spin. That’s why his strike rate is as low as it is and it’s also why he’s been worked out so easily this summer.

If he’s to develop to even be as good as Rory Burns (let alone Cook) he’ll need to learn how to play through the offside, straight and develop a scoring shot to the spinners.

Disappointing display from Hameed this morning going into a shell, however he has far more promise and potential than any opener we’ve had in a while. I’m quietly confident he will improve further and play for England for years to come

Sorry but your memory mustn’t be very good. The buildup to and the subsequent 2011 ashes series saved his bacon in that respect as he was definitely on his way out of the team around late 2009 early 2010

Guardian article discussing whether he should be dropped:

Cook was definitely on the verge of being dropped on the South Africa in 2009/10.

I also remember an innings at home against Pakistan at the Rose Bowl saving his place.
Thank you - knew it was around then

Concerning that he looked great when the wicket was flat but as soon as there was some movement he went into his shell. People fap over his technique but his resilience is an issue.
Reality is that all of our openers aren’t great options let’s be honest, and in an ideal world none of them would be near the test team - Burns, Sibley or Hameed

Aye his mental toughness is my concern but he will get a run now
Malan looked good which was promising

Aye not a bad session at all. I’d take another two of those today. 220 ahead, 6 down. If we’re still batting at close we’ll win. India have bowled better today and it looks tricky out there
