Cook's got a better left foot and better in defence. Agree they're both poor on the front foot.

Australia were number 1 in the world with a one dimensional bowler like McGrath leading the attack. Fancy just being able to pitch it up a good line and length.
This one's going to get a MASSIVE nibble.
the key difference been he had an 800 test wicket bowler at the other end.
People seem to think we will get to number 1 with a four man attack, we wont because the 4 man attack isnt good enough to consistently keep winning games.
Great we knock over sides on damp green tops at will but we have a 12 point gap to make up on India which will mean beating top sides in their own back yard consistently

People won't disagree with any of the points you have made there EB as we probably need a Shane Watson style bowler. Like Colly but faster. However, we have improved over time because the bowling unit we have is a) better than years gone by b) able to get wickets in different conditions - Australia in glorious sunshine and flat tracks while Swann seems to get wickets on pitches that don't suit. The England bowling attack isn't as good as say SA (even without a spinner) but it is nowhere near as bad as you try to make out. This winter will be the key.
I havent said the attack is bad per se, just a bit one dimensional at times and it lacks star quality. Until this issue is addressed we will struggle to become the number one test side
We have 5 tests at home to India and if the sun is out we will struggle to win a test let alone the series
then three tests in UAE against Pakistan and 2 tests in Sri Lanka
I would guess we need to win atleast 6 out of those 10 tests to go to number one
