Don Goodman

He very clearly still loves us. Did you see the game last year or the year before when onien was on as a guest and don spent all game swapping Sunderland fan stories.

As a complete neutral, some of the stuff he came out with was really weird. Not going along with the hatred line but strange all the same.

Did he leave on good terms etc? Good rep with the fans when he was with you?
The timing of his signing was a bit strange. He signed in 1992 but was cup tied. We were very poor that season bar the FA Cup were we reached the final.

He was our best striker (in the league) but John Byrne scored in every round of the cup until he missed a very good chance early on in the final. So Don was on the perifiry really, playing in meaniless league games but missing the big cup games. Peter Davenport played in the cup but he was largely finished.

The thing I remember most about Don was his unusual running style. He kind of ducked down low before busting forward in the odd low crouch but he could definitely shift. He scored more than a goal every 3 games so he was a decent signing but he wasn't anywhere near as exciting as Marco who he had replaced.

I think my dislike of him is not his fault tbf.

He replaced Marco, and I just couldn't like him for that reason.
Whoever replaced Marco was ganna get a hard time from me.

Daft, but definitely not his fault.

That’s interesting because on our forum at Sheff Utd for years our fans have noticed that Goodman seems to hate us too.
Some fans have asked if he has history as a Wolves or WBA player when playing us.
He always praises the opposition and when we score he’ll comment that we were lucky and probably don’t deserve it etc.
He even said the red card for Bristol City against us in the play-offs should have been yellow because it spoils the game when the replay show Moore was pulled back.

Be interesting to hear his comments in the final if he’s more biased towards Sunderland or Sheff Utd.

To be honest think the nation as a whole are generally positive towards Sunderland. You’re a great club, great fans that has massively under achieved since the war.
However the media are very pro Newcastle, it’s sickly and I don’t think they give Sunderland enough respect.
Are pictures of their open top bus parade still being shown on the evening news??

The trouble with some people on here is,they take any criticism of SAFC personally unless they’re doing it themselves of course. So ex players like Don Goodman,Marco and Ally McCoist are seemingly not allowed an opinion 🤷‍♂️
Great point. If I could be bothered to do a trawl it would be funny to see the comments slagging the players / manager / club from the same posters getting all upset that Goodman is daring to call it how he sees it.
