Bless, Riviera's really getting wound up by this Fairs Cup malark. Bless, maybe one day you too can claim to support a club that have won a major European trophy, then again, probably not.

A) I'm not the one getting wound up, just stating facts.

B)

Fairs Cup 1969 lads, if three of them sit proudly in the Nou Camp's trophy room, well that's good enough for me.

Alongside the Pyrenees Cup and the Latin Cup

You keep harping on about UEFA not recognising it, did the competition have anything to do with UEFA? No. Then why would it need it's official recognition? The Fairs Cup was a highly regarded trophy, probably more so than the Europa League of today. Don't be too bitter lads, eh? Seems we have a case of dirty green mackems. ;)

That's why 3 teams didn't bother to turn up for their matches the year you won it

The jealousy, bitterness and sour grapes in this thread is absolutely brilliant. Wonderfully ironic too considering the original thread title.

Where was there any jealousy, bitterness or sour grapes? Pointing out the fact that the competition means fuck all is in no way an example of any of the above.

You keep telling yourself that if it makes you sleep easier. ;)

Website History

The Inter-Cities Fairs Cup was a European football competition played between 1955 and 1971. The competition was the idea of Swiss pools supremo Ernst Thommen, Ottorino Barassi from Italy, and the English Football Association general secretary Stanley Rous, all of whom later became senior officials at FIFA. As the name suggests, the competition was set up to promote international trade fairs. Friendly games were regularly held between teams from cities holding trade fairs and it was from these games that the competition evolved. The competition was initially only open to teams from cities that hosted trade fairs and where these teams finished in their national league had no relevance. Early competitions also featured a one city, one team rule. After 1968, it was sometimes referred to as the Runners-Up Cup, with teams now qualifying based on league position. In 1971, it came under the auspices of UEFA and was replaced by the UEFA Cup.[1][2]

While the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup is recognised as the predecessor to the UEFA Cup, it was not organised by UEFA. Consequently, UEFA do not consider clubs' records in the Fairs Cup to be part of their European record.[1]

got to give some credit to scum for winning it but it was hardly an elite cup competition then

He seems to missing the fact that the Spanish to English translation on the Barcelona website is incorrect if it claims the Fairs Cup was the UEFA Cup, it wasn't .......... the Fairs Cup was nothing to do with UEFA and they don't acknowledge it in any way.

The only reason that Barcelona list the Fairs Cup, alongside the Pyrenees Cup and the Latin Cup, is that it was the very first European trophy they won.

Ironically it was the same season that Newcastle last won a current major trophy :-D

After a quick 5 minute search I suggest RTG gets on the phone to the above who claim the Fairs Cup to be a major trophy (there's probably countless other clubs and media outlets that too claim it so you might want to do some extra research).
Strange isn't it that only mackems seem to take exception to it being labelled a major trophy? It's as if your all bitter about it for some reason.. dirty green mackems (again, I simply cannot get over the irony of the thread title ) some might say.
