Aye, but it was a f***ing fine certificate. ;)

And re: winning pre-season tourneys, how could you lot forget the most spectacular pre-season trophy there is, the Trofeo Teresa Herrera, famously won by us last year.

 i love how they make them massive to seem more important, i'm sure that portugal cup thing was huge as well.

UEFA don't recognise the Fairs Cup ........ end of story.
It wasn't organised by them and they don't recognise the results in their archives.

The world famous team Newcastle beat in the final were there because the world famous US Luxembourg hadn't turned up for their 1st round match.

Also, in the first round, the world famous Kjøbenhavns Boldklub hadn't bothered to turn up for their game. Leeds United had qualified on the toss of a coin in one of theirs.

The team, Ujpest FC, played in the semi-final, the world famous Göztepe A.Ş, were there because the team they should have played in the quarter final didn't bother to show up.

Nowt to do with UEFA, just that the Fairs Cup was an earlier competition.

People who say that the Fairs Cup is the predecessor of the UEFA Cup should understand that donkey carts were the predecessor to the Porsche Carrera GT ........ i.e. nowt like it.

What 'class' would that be then?

Come off it mate, the look on the Mags faces at work when it was announced we'd signed Wickham said everything.

Yes you can argue he lacks experience, but bottom line he is one of the most talented young kids of his generation, you'd be raving if you signed him.

It shows the difference in ambition between the clubs.

It wasn't ran by UEFA when we won it so it wouldn't be. Not entirely sure why that would make any difference. The Intertoto Cup is a UEFA recognised trophy if that's your criteria for 'major' trophy status.

Everyone else accepts the Fairs Cup as the forerunner of the UEFA Cup (including the UEFA) website. That's good enough for me.

The UEFA Cup replaced the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in the 1971/72 season. The list of finals from that competition are listed below, but please note that the Fairs Cup is not considered a UEFA competition, and hence clubs' records in the Fairs Cup are not considered part of their European record.

Not recognised by UEFA but still not good enough proof for the Mags is it?

The UEFA Cup had a different name, a different trophy, different entry qualification, different rules and a different format. The Fairs Cup competition wasn't organised by UEFA and they wash their hands of it.

Yet some Mags still claim it was the UEFA Cup just like they claim they never wanted Bobby Robson out, never wanted Keegan to return and never used words like 'Geordie Nation', Messiah' or 'King Kev'

every three months this debate comes up, and every three months I have to search for that f***ing link and post it and every time it shuts some mag up until the next one comes along in another three months time.
well i've posted it twice now

Like I've said they may have never won a current major trophy for half a century but the Mags are world class at rewriting history .......... Tyneside, and other, Sunderland fans got so sick of them using the 'Geordie Nation' phrase that many stopped calling themselves Geordies, which is a shame.

Nowadays you won't find one Mag who admits to saying those words

Using the words was pathetic but nowhere near as bad as pretending they never said it.

Shame that so many of the mags that post on here are just thick as fuck Keegan era *****, I like some genuine debate and piss taking with decent mags (got friends who I'd put in this catergory).

Bless, Riviera's really getting wound up by this Fairs Cup malark. Bless, maybe one day you too can claim to support a club that have won a major European trophy, then again, probably not. ;)
