Depression

I'm inclined to agree, but the prevalence is getting higher and higher. I think something to do with modern life is triggering these new cases.

Does my head in how many people claim they're 'depressed' these days when in actual fact they're just a bit down or feeling sorry for themselves. GP's are far too quick to diagnose and put people on pills as a quick fix too. It's completely wrong.

It's basically the new "I've got flu" when in fact you've got the sniffles.

Ps: before the backlash starts this ain't a knock on anyone who's posted so far. I don't doubt anyone's claims on here, just an honest observation of people doing a disservice to a very serious illness in modern day society.
Good and pretty accurate point. All I will say is sometimes people find it easier to talk on a message board about their problems when they've no one else to talk to. Not been posting for long but from lurking the SMB gives the best advice including yours.

As I mentioned before in these threads, I've struggled with depression since my mid teens, and had one serious attempt and several "near misses" over the years, culminating in a bit of a meltdown last Autumn. I'd become totally withdrawn and had cut myself off from everyone, my kids, family, work.

Took some doing, but I eventually returned to the office after nearly a year working at home, and got myself some counselling. It sounds very simple now, but at the time it was a huge realisation, the only person beating me up about everything was me.
It's an ongoing process, but at the moment I feel calmer, more centered, more at peace than I have for at least a decade, probably more.

There's always the past, there's always the future, we spend to much time worrying about these to realise what we have right now.

Edit: reflecting on talking online helping - I put my heart and soul on my facebook (for bellends I know) and just said how lonely and isolated and completely useless I felt. I talked about my fear of leaving for work, the panic attacks I had thinking I was being judged, the constant feeling of worthlesness. The number of people who came out the woodwork for me was humbling, people I haven't seen in years, people I've met though old jobs, the lot.

For as much bravado and bull shit there is on here, you won't find a better place for solace from strangers at hard times mate. That's been evident in so many different situations.

You're right mate, have absolutely no doubt that I do have it, but the doctors had me diagnosed after about 5 minutes of the first appointment.

Can't argue with that mate. Helped me over the years. Only just started posting but when I was I down I would always go on the SMB (obviously not PF). It makes you laugh, it makes you think and most important it makes you feel at home. Love the place :-)

I'm going to echo what Janiep says. You have a girlfriend who clearly thinks the world of you, most people aren't that lucky.

You want to succeed, you want to improve your life. That's a great sign. Have you considered doing something different, evening classes or the like? It may give you more confidence in your own abilities.

I am lucky, I haven't had to go through this, so this thread is a sobering read. Good luck to you all

Cheers you and janiep, I'm not sure I'm deserving of that support my heads pounding and I just want to get under my duvet and not come out

What's the prognosis for your illness? I hope we aren't going to have another one of those condolences threads on here in the near future. :(
Me too Mate. Finished my Chemotherapy course last week following my surgery. Now have to wait 4 weeks before a CT scan to see if the chemo worked or not. If so my odds are 44% that the cancer will get me if it hasn't got it then the odds are 100% that the cancer will get me. ( in which case , blond bisexual swedish twin sisters of the world be ware you are top of my bucket list )
Meanwhile life goes on. I made the national news here at the weekened doing my Awesome bat dancing at an Eminem gig after having been of the piss at the rugby league nines all day. The effects of not drinking for 6 months coupled with many many beers in the sun :-)[DOUBLEPOST=1392592976][/DOUBLEPOST]

If you're not happy then all the trinkets and toys modern life gives us won't fill that gap. Advertisements don't sell just products anymore, they sell us an unobtainable perfect lifestyle and if you buy into that shite you're surrounded by it. People can't be told how to feel.

Depression is not about feeling sad or a bit low. It is a mental illness that ruins your life. Take all the help you can get, and this site is actually a great source of help.

I think they may be a clip of my at yesterdays rugby ( we where dressed as samoans not batman by now) demonstrating how truly awesome my batdancing was only bettered by my drunken voguing of yesterday :-)

The Nines was great and it should be something the EPL tries. Say 7 a side all teams at wemberlee for a weekend. Would be great fun

I've already looked on youtube couldn't see any drunken bat dancing there. Vogueing as well eh? I did that once many years ago Madonna makes it look easy. Next day when I realised what I'd done I vowed I'd never dance again, drunk or not.:)
