Dan Neil

Dan Neil has scored or created a goal on 30 occasions in 180 games for us at the lower levels. 1 in 5, Obviously if he was a regular in our Premier League team those stats would go down, he looks like he might score maybe 2 a season and assist twice.

Then look at all of the other things you would expect from a competent Premier League midfielder to do well.

Tackling.
Passing.
Pace.
Heading.
Running with the ball.
Awareness and positioning.

Is he really good enough for this level ?
No.His main failing was he could not receive a ball from a keeper/full back control it then turn and go. Lost possession numerous times leaving the opposition a clear run towards goal. FACT. Never improved over the last 2 seasons .Sorry to say but to me he had peaked with no signs of going to the next level. My opinion, lot's will disagree .

I am nto getting carried awaym those from league 1 to the prem are legends, just like the players who did that from the late 80s are.

Its not very controversial, just goes to show how people are immediatley taking for granted where we are

You'd think 5 years in league one might make people slightly more humble, but clearly not.

We have bloody Xhaka playing for us!

4 years ago we were in league one.

Ask yourself how that happened.
Who's taking him for granted?

You've got your knickers in a twist 'cos he's not getting a look in. When people point out that there's better players ahead of him and the club's moved on, you lose your rag, saying we're disrespectful and the club have done him a disservice. It's bonkers.
Maybe baffling was dramatic, but I do think not giving him a chance was a bit of a missed opportunity that could have benefitted us. There's been games this season where we would have had little to lose by giving Dan Neil a look for half an hour.

On being a squad player - yes, an assumption. But based on the fact that he wanted to stay at Sunderland this summer, even when he was clearly being phased out and has always chosen to stay in the face of consistent speculation about his future. I think given his background and relationship with the club, we could have convinced him to stay for another year so he could play in the Premier League for us.
Name one.

Optimally,i would have liked to have seen Dan sign a contract and then gone out on loan to a top championship side to play in his old more advanced position .
I think he did us a favour doing his best in the 6 role but hasnt really got the football intelligence/adabtability to carry it off, accordingly his life long game as an 8 has regressed and it will take some time to regain ground . He will never do that at our level and under that pressure . Fingers crossed for him he does it at another club and eventually makes the PL. He would always be welcome back with that side.

Man City away is the obvious one. We needed to protect Xhaka and Sadiki, and the game was basically over with an hour gone.

I think we could obviously used an extra central midfielder against Fulham and Leeds, yes there was still something to play for in those games, but we weren't playing well in either.

what did Bally do more like?

All the players from league one to the prem are legends aye, absolutely no doubt about that. So LON is not either?

You wanted KLD, Speakmand and RLB sacked or removed so I take your opinion with a pinch of salt

None of them tooks us from the 3rd divison to the first in 4 seasons did they

So aye they aren't.

But these are.

This board wanted KLD to leave and for Speakman to be sacked mate.

Its not got a barometer of what is going on.
Ahhhh, the good old days. Seeing people calling KLD worse than shite and hoping he fcked off back to his Mammy and all that. Halcyon times.

Xhaka and Sadiki did make way. Regis wanted to get minutes into more important legs.

Yes, I agree there was arguments for him to be involved in those games - it's been discussed previously - but as you admit, those weren't occasions where there was little to lose.

Don’t think anyone really has a problem with Dan Neil like. He’ll want more minutes on the pitch but RLB doesn’t think he’s as good as other options, so we won’t be offering first 11 wages - so he’ll want to leave for more minutes and is therefore running his contract down if not sold.

It’s standard and happens everywhere.

He goes with my best wishes when he does leave as I do think he’s a very good championship standard CM. Whether he’s good enough for the prem I don’t think so, but I thought that about O’Nien, Cirkin & Ballard too and they’ve started well - Ballard especially.

RLB clearly doesn’t think Neil is good enough for his system either so it’s a bit of a waste keeping him beyond this season imo.

Can’t be talking sense mate, get in the bin.

I personally think the clubs/RLB reasoning is no point giving game time to a fringe player who hasn't committed to the club.
If he had a 2-3 year contact I am convinced he would have had minutes on the pitch already, like Mundle.

If he moves on I'll follow his career and hope he does well like all ex players, especially local ones.

I understand the little downside, but I don't really see the upside. If we were playing him, he would be a project given the league and his last season.

Did he want to stay, in a squad player capacity, I don't know, Im assuming his stance changed over the summer when he was made captain.

If all was well on his side, he signed on a squad wage etc, Id be on the opposite side of the discussion, there would be potential upside for both parties in giving him minutes, as it is, I don't.

There has been a lot made of homegrown quota recently, and rightly so, to have him on a wage befitting his status would be beneficial to everyone, but it just hasn't gone that way, and I'm assuming it's not the club responsible.

I agree. You see what Xhaka is capable of doing in those scenarios, he demands the ball even when he's covered and can immediately play the ball to someone who can make things happen. It's unreasonable to expect a young lad to operate at that level of footballing brain but that's what we need at this level.

It's no shame on him not being up to this level on a regular basis and it's great credit to him that he's had 200 appearances and been a captain at the age of 24. Ultimately the club gave him a great deal of support and responsibility to help him develop and he's given great service in return. We'd all have loved if he'd pushed on like Henderson but there's no evidence that he will and given that no other PL clubs are in for him suggests that the all agree. Hopefully he'll achieve great things over the next decade and he continues to be a fan of the club.

Poor lad deserves better this season. Put in so many good performances the last couple of seasons and Regis picks Rigg ahead of him. You can’t tell me that Rigg offers more to the team than Neil does…

I say after 2 years and 50 posts on here I can't see a single thing you've said that's not critical of our club or our players.

Oh?
And being unable to spell "Sunderland" in your bio doesn't help the pervasive odour of Bisto surrounding you either.

Legend ?

A club legend is a highly admired player known for exceptional skill, loyalty, longevity, and significant contributions (like winning trophies or scoring crucial goals) who embodies the club's values and leaves a lasting legacy, becoming an iconic figure for fans long after they've left. Key traits include deep loyalty, outstanding performance, making big moments, and representing the club well on and off the field.

That cuts out Luke O'Nien then 🥵

*Unless you can take criteria 4 from 5 🤔

*Although most Club legends only had 4 out of 5 🤔
