Craft Beer

Went to Magic Rock tap the other week. Really feel their beers have gone downhill, especially since early to mid 2016. Didn't enjoy any of their three new ones. Mad Hatter who were another of my favourite brewery’s seem to have gone really quiet. Bit disappointed in the market at the moment. Think it’s going through a bit of a transition phase due to an explosion in demand.

There’s a pub in Kingswells Aberdeen thy does Deeside craft larger and I have to say it’s a beautiful larger. Last night I had a bottle of Innes & Gunn Blood Red Sky and that was a delight.

Give it until the summer and Beavertown will be sold in Tesco/ASDA. They're all over the place nowadays.

I hope so. Was in London on Saturday and had a few pints of Gamma Ray on tap and a can of Neck Oil. Both very nice

I’ve had 2 Deeside beers (MacBeth and their Steam Beer) and was incredibly disappointed with both. Both flavourless, and steam beer wasn’t even the right colour for the style!

Another bump.

Looking to buy some of the Beavertown ales, any good websites SMB?
I got a canny deal though the "Honest Brew" website:

Using the £10 discount code HAPPYBEERDAY (dunno if it is still live) as long as you spent more than £35.

I bought a mixed case of 12 Beavertown beers for £29.90. I added another 3 Beavertown beers at £2.49 each bringing the total up to £37.37 (i.e. over the £35 threshold). The discount code took a tenner off and delivery added £5.99 making the total £33.36 for 15 cans.

That works out at £2.22 per can. Not bad.

I know I'm gonna get absolute pelters from the SMB for this. But I have to say that some of these American style craft beers are f***ing class

Granted, a bit more expensive, but they are very tasty

Have a Beavertown Neck Oil Session IPA on the go. Very canny

I've said elsewhere that I find craft ales to taste too chemical. That said, it's the Brewdog stuff I have problems with.

I might take a quick slurp of the American stuff and see if I can be tempted away from real ale.

Where were you drinking? My local sells Neck Oil on tap, fiver a pint which isn't bad really considering location. They've got a double IPA out now which I'm yet to try, will have to pick up a tin tomorrow.

Spoiled for choice around east/north London, Hackney Brewery, Hammerton Brewery, Crate Brewery, Pressure Drop, Beavertown etc. you would end up dead trying them all on a weekend!

I've ordered from that site but missed out on the Beavertown mixed case. Spent too long looking on other sites and it was out of stock when i went to check out :(
I've asked to be emailed when it's back in stock.

Settled for the festival mixed case and ordered a few Gamma Rays & Neck Oiles seperately

Was drinking around Shoreditch and Bethnall Green.
Can't remember the name of half of them. I was with my cousin who works in the city so i just let him choose where to go

Had a couple from the Kernel Brewery which were nice as well

Just looked on google maps and seems we spent most of the time in Hackney actually, walked further than i realised

What does that mean? And what have you tried?

As commented, normally the Brewdog stuff. My meaning is the craft beer, at least the Brewdog beer, tastes like the effluent that comes out of a chemicals plant down in Teesside.

Perhaps the American craft ales will be better.

Brewdog use, primarily, US hops. Brewdog beers are a milder version, in terms of hop forward flavour, than the actual American craft ales. If you don't like Brewdogs pale ales and IPAs, you won't like the American ones.

They won’t. I’m assuming what you perceive as “chemically” is actually hop flavour. When it comes to American style ales, they are incredibly highly hopped.

Mate's opened a craft beer bottle shop in Bishop Auckland if anyone lives close by (next to train station), canny place, not into that type of stuff myself usually but some nice stuff he has in. Take away's too

On Friday neet I had a can of "Even More Coco Jesus"

It looked like the oil I drain from my engine every year. 12 f***ing % anarl.

Then I probably won't like the American craft ales. :)

Ditto.

I'm fine with real ales, but moving up into craft ales just isn't coming off for me.

He’ll probably have had loads of ‘craft’ style cask ales loaded with Chinook, Citra and other American hops man

It’s just that Brewdog is quite mediocre.

What you need is some barrel aged barley wine.

This is my problem, is the aftertaste due to the hops or something else?

I've only really noticed it with Brewdog beers and it's the same aftertaste regardless of which of their beers you're drinking so I think it's more likely to be the water they use or something like that. Plenty of other beers use the same types of hops and don't have the aftertaste.
