Coast League Banter

Last season Washington turned up at our place, packed the off side field from ball one (including boundary riders) and had Ebs bowl a line at least a foot outside off stump. In his entire spell you'd be lucky if he bowled five balls that would have hit the stumps.

Whats the difference between doing that when you're in the field and defending with the bat? Both are "defensive" tactics intended to consolidate your position in the game and make the opposition force the issue. Your comment about Washington always going for the win is laughable mate as they've probably been involved in more draws than any other team in north east cricket over the past two or three years.

I'm not having a go btw, mrreal was entirely entitled to go the way he did and there's nothing to say that he wasn't right in doing it; the point I'm making is that all teams play "negative" cricket when it suits and your own club in recent years have been worse than most. Therefore you have a right cheek to criticise others.

Soon you'll have escaped the sub-standard DCCL teams and umpires that are weighing you and your club down so much; and will be in NEPL2 with all of the other cricketing juggernauts. I'm sure your many years of tearing up the Coast League (*cough*) will stand you in good stead for the step up and you'll never have to try and block out the NEPL2 bowling for draws.

Would you care to elaborate and tell me the actual facts of how many games Washington 1sts and 2nds drew when batting second last year please.

It might just put your theory about Washington to bed.

This getting a bit heated haha.

I'm not bothered how the Harbour played, thats up to them and down to us to get 10 wickets. I was only commenting on the fact they blamed us for killing the game. When they put us in, we declared and they shut up from ball 1.

I know for a fact we have played negatively in previous years but you do what's best for your club at the end of the day.

We had a lot of draws last year but at the same time we only batted second twice. I won 2 tosses all season and we had to bat 1st every week. Our attack wasn't as strong so we aired on the side of caution with declarations and fields etc. We will be a lot more ambitious this season though.

Do you think there should be winning draws in the Coast League Sweeper?

Why do teams always bat second out of choice?

Is it the timed cricket element cos I prefer batting first and putting them under pressure.

If you bat 2nd you are more in control of the game. You can decide to go for the total or if you feel it's out of reach you can set your stall out not to be all out and gain a draw and 5 extra points. So the toss becomes very important.

There is a little incentive to bat 1st as you would get 25 points for the win instead of 20 by winning batting second. Other leagues have winning and losing draws though. So you can gain extra points by scoring a % of the other teams total etc.

To be successful in timed cricket though you need to be able to take 10 wickets.

What is everyone's opinion of timed cricket? Good or bad, positives of to it and negatives to it and what changes would you make

Only one game played at the weekend and Murton bagged 25 pts.

Is the season over before most teams have played a meaningful game?

Prefer timed cricket although don't think the points system in the DCCL necessarily gives enough incentive to bat first and therefore doesnt promote positive cricket enough for me.
Ideally a side looking to win the league should be batting first and getting a total on the board while giving themselves enough time to take 10 wickets thats where the skill comes in and thats what the top sides do well. This sometimes involves taking a gamble and declaring with a score which offers the team batting second half a chance. Think the Coast League should offer an additional ten points to the team batting first rather than five.

NEPL also have the winning draw option which tends to ensure sides dont fully shut up shop batting second and keeps the game alive. Basically you get next to nothing for a losing draw and rewarded for a winning draw giving the side batting second a second target to chase if the winning total is out of reach.

Personally think batting seconds a somewhat negative option and wouldnt enjoy playing in a side where they go into a game looking to draw. Amazing how many teams crumble second half if they lose 2 or 3 quick wickets.

I would agree entirely, and in addition I think timed cricket encourages young uns to improve their game i.e. they have to graft for most of their wickets and when batting they're encouraged to get their heads down and not just swing the bat in a lost cause. Mind they dont always folow this logic like :)

Any other results from the Ralph Walton Cup tonight?

This weeks Echo preview:

New boys in to kick-start CA
Published on Thursday 17 May 2012 12:30

BOLDON CA hope the impending double weekend of 3D Sports Durham Coast league fixtures will help kick-start their season and get their title defence properly underway.

Two washouts and a shock defeat are the sum total of their campaign to date and the frustration is palpable for a team seeking to make it a hat-trick of championship wins.

With so little cricket played, it is remarkable that they are already a massive 52 points behind leaders Murton, but two matches in two days could provide the perfect platform to begin the fightback.

And while they might not have seen much action on the field, they haven’t been idle off it, following up the signing of Brian Conlon last week with the acquisition of Owen Gwyn a few days ago.

Gwyn, a former Blackhall player, has joined from Hetton Lyons and both he and Conlon go into the team for Saturday’s trip to Hylton and Sunday’s home game against Easington.

Three played, three won – it seems almost unreal that one team has managed to play every game, but that is what Murton have done and they have reaped the rewards with their early dominance of the league standings.

But they face a tough double, beginning at Dawdon and concluding with a home game against Ryhope, two sides who are likely to be among their longer-term challengers.

The match against Dawdon throws up an intriguing test of sibling rivalry. The significant close-season transfer activity at Murton, which saw six new faces arrive, included the acquisition of Anthony Gale from Dawdon, and on his return there on Saturday he will be facing his old Green Drive team-mates who are skippered by his brother, Stephen.

Dawdon expect to be at full strength for this one, but Murton will be missing both Ian King and Keith Chapman with seam bowler Kevin Mawhinney one of the named replacements.

Ryhope’s double begins with a home match against Silksworth – a derby that the visitors hope will provide the perfect incentive to get their season properly started.

Opening bowler David Nield’s ankle injury means he will play in the seconds as a batter, but Steve Wright has made himself available, with hopes that his shoulder will hold up for both games. Ryhope are able to include Lee Gilbert, although Chris Lawrence misses the Murton match on Sunday.

Seaham Park are on their travels both days, with Saturday’s game at Washington followed by a trip to Peterlee.

Michael Evans returns for Park, but Alex Ludlow misses the second game and will be replaced by James Downes. Peterlee must do without Micky Buckingham, so spin bowler Ben Green is handed an opportunity.

After the visit of Boldon CA, Hylton follow up with a trip to Seaham Harbour.

Owen Williamson misses the first match, with Andrew Kibble replacing him, while Kit Allan senior returns to action on Sunday. After almost a two-year absence following an eye operation, Andy Stephenson returns to first-team action for Harbour.

hylton 209 for 9 dec b taylor 59

A win and a loss for Washington over the weekend.

On Saturday after a slight delay to get the out field sorted. Washington declared 0n 175 for 4 Seaham Park got the runs with an over to spare. Must say a sporting declaration led to an interesting game.

On Sunday Washington won te toss!!! and put silky in to bat. Silksworth 126 all out Washington 127 for 4.

Old Timer/ mr real -

Whats the craic with Adam Hickey? I saw that he played and bowled for you in midweek but was under the impression that he was at the Academy this year? Unless I'm mistaken academy players are not able to play for other teams?

Adam is contracted to play for Durham Academy and also Washington CC. The academy told Adam this week he had to play games for his parent club and by the rules he is okay to do so.

Academy players can be released back to their 'parent' club (no other unless special dispensation) . Only right.

Just had conformation -

He's entitled to play LEAGUE games for WCC when released by the academy but not junior games or cup ties.

He's played for Washington in the 1st XI, 2nd XI and u15 cups this season and Washington have been chucked out of all three cups for fielding an ineligible player.

A 15 year old lad wanting to play cricket should be allowed to play whenever especially when been told to do so by his county. How on earth they can kick Washington from an under 15 tournament (his age groups at his club) simply because he is playing? Laughable.
